How much higher are side effect rates with dutasteride vs finasteride?

26 years old- Almost a year on finasteride but hairline is continuing to thin. It helped the crown (no signs of hair loss there now) but i think i need more help (i have been on minoxidil for 3 years too).

I wanted to give finasteride enough time, but it does not look like its strong enough for my hairline. I have had 0 sides so i am considering getting some blood work done and evaluating dutasteride.

For those who have moved from finasteride to dutasteride and/or those with the relevant studies- anything on side effect rates between the 2? Any info on moving from finasteride to dutasteride much appreciated. Thanks

Check out the adverse effect section of this review. Dutasteride has paradoxically lower incidences of side effects compared to finasteride in every category except for gynaecomastia (It's not a big difference though, 0.8% increased risk over placebo versus finasteride's 0.7%). They really do have a comparable safety profile.

This is helpful, thank you.

I will probably see my derm That prescribed me finasteride almost a year ago soon (takes it himself but he's much older). It's just frustrating that it helped my crown so much but not the hairline- does it usually take closer to that 18 months to get max benefit?

Its been 10-11 months, so i am just debating if i wait longer for the finasteride or jump on dutasteride if my Doctor approved and blood work looks fine

I would say stay on finasteride for another year; some people need 2 years to see the full potential. If I read your post correctly, you got some regrowth on the crown and maintenance on your hairline; i.e. you haven't lost MORE of your hairline, but you're unsatisfied with the regrowth. So you have nothing to lose by staying on finasteride for another year; it might get even more effective during that time, so switching to dutasteride right now seems premature.

Crown drastically improved, but hairline slowed down AT BEST. I definitely have not had regrowth on hairline and that is with 5% minoxidil twice a day, i would say a little loss on the hairline since i started.

Now when people say they see full potential at 2 yrs, is that their peak and its just slow loss or maintenance at best from there?

I literally have no idea what my hair would look like had i not taken finasteride/minoxidil- everybody in my family has pretty good hair except my moms dad who passed away very young. The pictures i have of him, he was too young to tell what his hair was destined to look like.
