jfrank, I have been through a similar situation and I don't know how severe your is or how old you are, but I don't expect to recover anything in my temples. I think the best I can hope for is to stop the recession or slow it dramatically. I am just about to finish my 3rd month on Propecia. I have lost an inch in 4 months in my right temple. Now if I were to use minoxidil consistently for the next year maybe I could get something back there, but I would need for my rapid recession to stop first and I'm not counting on it. I would be fine, however, if things would stop receeding and thinning now or even in a month. After that I may be fucked.

well, my temples are not receeding.. they just thinned about 1/2 an inch.. however, on my frontal hairline i lost about 50% of my hair (in density.. not receeding).. I'm a diffusse thinner... what's surprising, is that about 6 months ago, the only problem area I was a little thinning of the vertex/crown.. however, now is it the opposite.. the front is worse than the back... the vertex has nicely grown back... the crown still sucks, but hasnt gotten worse (thinned about 2" acroos the top, where i used to split my hair) I WANNA FIX MY FRONT.... Dr. LEE told me i prob have genetically accelerated male pattern baldness - more hairs in terminal, and could regrow with treament... but what does he know.. he's prob just sellnig his products..

The reason is that there is damage done to the follicle once it has started to minaturize. Once a follicle is basically dead, or no longer able to produce a terminal hair, its tough to bring it back to life. Inhibiting DHT will sometimes reverse the miniaturization process a bit, but it can't bring back hair that's been gone for years. Growth stimulants are pretty much the same story- you can only get back some of the hair you've lost relatively recently.

DHT inhibition works to keep hair because DHT is one of the essential components in the miniaturization process. Without as much DHT, the process slows way down or stops.

how long is "relatively recently". I've seen many people say this. Is it a couple months? couple years?

I want to fix my front also. I don't know that much about all this sh*t compared to many people around here, but I have been told by people who's opinions I've come to trust that Dr. Lee is legit. My Father is a Derm, so its going to be interesting to compare what he says with what Dr. Lee says after I consult with him.
