How common is balding severely at 22?

I'm about a NW4.5 after being a NW2 from 16 to most of 21. Now I have severe bald spots in my hairline and thinning crown hairs where they still grow but they look like baby hairs in comparisn to the rest. My brother is 30 and just started thinning in his crown and it's way less obvious than mine and he has a much better hairline than I do. I've started to shave my head down to a 0 with a clipper so I'm pretty much near bald to hide the baldness, it sucks.

start finasteride. I would probably look like Dr. Phil or worse by the time I hit your age

I'm fortunate that while I'm balding at 22, I haven't aged in the face like many people seem to do at that age. Still wish I had a full head of hair instead of shaving it down to a 0 though.

I would get on finasteride but I'm afraid of the side effects and heard minoxidil on it's own won't do much?

I am not saying minoxidil will perform miracles(it has for some), but don't sell it short.

Agreed. People don't realize that 40% of min users get regrowth, and 80% at least get slowed down hair loss with it. It's not only useful if used with finasteride. It's just there is synergy so that if you are using finasteride you might as well add minoxidil to try it out.

Yes if you can tolerate finasteride./minoxidil., the two are reputed to work more effectively together. Which makes sense because they each target different areas of the complex hair loss mechanism(s).

I will also have to agree that minoxidil is not useless on its own. I've been using it on its own for a year and I've had noticeable regrowth. It's nothing crazy, but it's cleared up some of the thinning and my hairline is slowly moving down. I'm also wary of finasteride's side effects.

I'm also wary of finasteride's side effects.

Only one way to find out is trying it. If you get sides just quit right away. Only people that have had long-term damage (propecaihelpnuts) are the ones who took it for years ignoring the side effects. All other horror stories aren't reputable. The studies are reputable and show the drug is safe. And if you identify yourself as a woman the most worrisome side effect (gyno) probably wouldn't be too bad for you correct?
