HELP!!!

I am a 20 year old, and I began using Rogaine about 3 weeks ago. I hadn't really experienced hair loss yet, and thought this would be good "prevention". However, all it has done is thin the hair in the back of my head in the crown area. I have stopped the Rogaine as of today, in fear that it will just cause it to bald and replace it with less full hair. Will my hair that was previously there grow back? I am starting on Propecia next week, as I believe this will be a better prevention tool.

Thanks,
Matt

Dude seriously.  .. Stay off the drugs till you actually need it. Propecia is a prescription drug and should be taken as such.
It should not be taken as a prevention tool!!! Can't imagine how many pills u'd pop a day if you would start taking drugs to prevent ailments.
Until you go to a doctor and get a prescription for it, lay off it!
No need to go balls out if you haven't even started to lose your hair

Sadly, in stopping minoxidil you'll probably experience a shed in that area.

After the shed, would I resume normal hair growth? Since I was not yet experiencing male pattern baldness, the hair should presumably grow back, correct?

Yeah, that's right. minoxidil is a commitment which should not be undertaken lightly. Save it for when you actually get a bald spot.

Well, that is a huge load off. I was really freaked that I was going to have just one big unnatural looking spot on the back of my head. Thank you guys for the help.

Also, why would stopping the minoxidil cause a shed after stopping? The hairs left on my head were there prior to starting the minoxidil, so I don't understand why stopping minoxidil would cause them to fall out.

Thanks again,
Matt

no, disregard what they said. 3 weeks is not enough time for minoxidil to have much of an impact, if any, on your hair. You will not shed when you stop it. It's not a big deal. Just stop and everything should be like it was before you started after a month or so.

Is it possible for minoxidil to thin my hair though? I want to make sure that I am not actually balding, but I had a full thick head of hair prior. Have you heard of this happening before?

Thanks,
Matt

One of the things minoxidil does is to get your hair phases in synch. So all the hair that shed recently, thinning out your hair in the process, is hair that would have shed and regrown over time anyway. The minoxidil just made it all shed at once.

Everything you've lost should grow back - and you should soon be back where you were before starting minoxidil.

And, definitely, if you don't need to use minoxidil and finasteride - please don't. Instead - waste your money on some expensive vitamins or something :)

Would using Propecia really be so bad? I figure it wouldn't hurt, and could prolong hair loss for quite a while..I'm not worried about the cost, so much as the effect. Doesn't it just block what causes DHT in the hair? I know there are possible side effects, but they are reversible with stopping of the treatment. Or could it have a similar side effect that the Rogaine did, since I haven't started hair loss?

matt, that's exactly what you should be doing if you are wrried you might be in the beginning stages of hairloss. Start propecia. Maybe throw Nizoral 1% in their every few days. You doin't need anything else.

Matt, you said " I hadn't really experienced hair loss yet, and thought this would be good "prevention".

If that statement is true - you really shouldn't be messing w/ finasteride.

Why? What would Finasteride do that is negative? From what I've read, I could take it for the rest of my life as a way to try to preserve most of my hair. I know about the possible side effect, but I also know that it is reversible with stoppage of the treatment, and also has the possibly to go away after time taking the finasteride. Also, I'm so paranoid right now. Literally days ago, I had thick hair in the back, and now it is thin. You did say that the minoxidil could have this effect?

Thanks,
Matt

i'd say if you are worried you are losing or are going to lose your hair or your dad is bald then do it. Get on the finasteride, bud. Really can't do you any harm.
