Hello fellow balders/ex-Balders.

After browsing through this forun I am completely confused. There are way too many treatments mentioned to keep straight. I asusme most are over the counter these days? Prescribed? Bought on the street corner?

Have most of you sought medical attention, or have you studied and self subscribed? I need to know where to start.

My situation: 33 year old. Slightly receding hairline, 4 inch diameter balding crown. Started 5 years ago. No thinning elsewhere, just that damn part on the top of my head. Otherwise my hair is pretty thick.

Questions:

1) Without treatment will this necessarily get worse? Seems to be traveling quite slow.
2) Why me? No need to answer that.
3) See a doctor? Or take your advice?
4) Since this is a very common pattern of baldness, recommendations from others with a similar pattern?

Thanks!

It probably isn't news to you that male pattern baldness is progressive, and based on what you've described, there's probably somewhere around a 99 percent chance that you, in fact, have male pattern baldness. Eventually, your hair will get worse. The time frame, however, is different for everyone. Best way to get an estimate is to look at your fellow family members. who's pattern are you following? was their hairloss aggressive or very slow? This at least gives you some idea. Since you mentioned it has been slow over the years, your odds of it just continuing at this same pace are pretty good, especially considering you are over thirty. Otherwise, its just a crap shoot.

Both. If you have a doctor that you feel comfortable with, go and see them and talk about your options. They may not know much about treatments, so go in armed with some knowledge so you can basically "ask" for the prescriptions if you feel they are right for you.

you can get propecia. its 1mg finasteride, and its more expensive. Or you can get proscar (which is designed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia) but is the EXACT SAME DRUG but in the 5mg form, and cut it up into fifths. It is cheaper this way. Either way you need a prescription unless you get it off an overseas online pharmacy. Some other guys on here can direct you to legit sites if you're interested in that route. Read on this site about Propecia to get the full story, as well as some other treatment options that aren't prescription required. http://www.hairlosssucks.com/faq.htm

don't have a similar pattern, i am a diffuse thinner with no visible balding spots yet. But, i can say that both propecia AND rogaine, the two most proven hair loss treatments typically work best on the crown area, which seems to be your problem area. So you're in luck!

Thanks Trent.

As far as family history, to my knowledge, I am the first and only one to show signs of baldness. Makes me wonder if my father is really my father......I'll worry about that later.

Ok there's a recurring theme, the "Big three". Propecia, Rogaine, Nizoral. The latter two I believe I can find at CVS. Propecia I can buy "legally"? online. Who needs doctors???

Think I'm gonna try Propecia from the link on this site...wish me luck. Hope I don't poison myself.
