Help Me Understand The Difference Between Thinning And Shedding, Also Can An Alcoholic Have Propecia

So i need help understanding if my hair is thinning, i shed about 100-150 hairs a day, sometimes they vary in length (should i be worried about that?) . Now i dont know if that means my hair is thinning or if it means those hairs will grow back. I have definitely lost some density in hair in the last 2 years. I know that male pattern baldness works by shrinking the hair follicles but what part does the shedding have to play with that?.

Also, i am currently a heavy drinker (borderline alcoholic) , would that have any interactions with propecia?. I ordered some and am still waiting to receive it.

Alcohol increases estrogen, which is why you see so many homeless bums with great heads of hair. Not really relevant, just thought I'd mention it lol

Obviously drinking heavily and taking any medication isn't great. Don't think there's any specific warnings on the label though.

I think I read a study a while ago that found that finasteride makes people drink less.

Thanks for the reply, so it should be safe for me to start propecia while still drinking? . Also do you think shedding = thinning ?

I mean there's nothing on the label so I guess, although I'd definitely try and get help with drinking, my dude :/

Shedding doesn't mean thinning. Most people lose around 100 hairs a day.

You'll know when you're thinning. It's recession that is hard to pick up on.

I tried but i keep relapsing , it is a difficult road. I have hairline reccession aswel , i am 25 and nw2 on one side and Norwood 1.5 on the other, possibly. Is it weird that some of the hairs are different length? , some i shed are considerably shorter than the others.

I hear you. You can do it though.

And is your hair different lengths (tapered, faded etc.) because that could just be normal shedding? Or it could be you are losing already miniaturized hairs.

The last time i got a haircut was about 7 weeks ago, so idk if its from faded or cut hairs. Is loosing miniaturized hairs normal?, or is it signaling that my male pattern baldness has gone into overdrive?.

From one borderline alcoholic to another, thinning and shedding go hand in hand with male pattern baldness. If your hair is in an active state of miniaturization when the hair sheds it will grow back significantly thinner until it produces no hair at all.

What is the plug test? , the hairs i am shedding are shorter in length but not thin. I dont know what that means. Btw Andy , were you still drinking while on propecia?.

Sure was and I still am. finasteride didn't work for me but alcohol had nothing to do with that.

While alcohol does reduce CLEARANCE of estrogen this will not help your hair. There is good estrogen for hair and bad estrogen and good estrogen receptors for hair and cancer and bad. For example, estrogen activating the beta receptor seems to be much better for hair for males than estrogen hitting the alpha receptors.

How much do you drink , if you dont mind me asking?.
Yeah i guess i shouldnt worry too much about extra sides from finasteride while still on the bottle. I will still monitor my sides extremely closely though just incase. I should receive my propecia hopefully by tomorrow.

It varies but usually drink heavily 3 times a week.

No idea about any of that. I was just going off what a doctor with male pattern baldness and former alcohol issues said.

Is the doctor bald now?

Ohh , i am worried because i have been on a third of vodka every day for a few months now. I guess i will have to do some blood tests first before i can start propecia then .

No, he's had a hair transplant. No idea if you're from England, but he's quite famous in the UK.
