I've searched for finasteride vs propecia and have not found anything conclusive as to whether the branded works better than the generic. Anyway, I'd like advice on starting off correctly.

I already tried Rogaine and it burned my scalp and gave me big flakes of Dandruff. I actually think it accelerated my hair loss as I was never able to see my scalp in the mirror, only receding in the area above my temples. Unfortunately I did not take a picture before I started using the Rogaine, so I don't have something to reference. Here is a picture I took today of my hair loss, I have a few questions.

1.) Finasteride or Propecia and why do people report better results with Propecia if it contains the same active ingredients?

2.) If Finasteride, 5mg or cut it in quarters?

3.) Should I use anything else in combination, along with whatever drug is chosen?

4.) Where is a reliable but inexpensive place to buy chosen drug, and do I need a prescription?

5.) Anything else I should know?

It looks like a lot of people are using 5mg finasteride cut into 1/4's. I guess I'll start out with that and Nizoral and see what happens ... still looking for input though if anyone has any?

Hi Joemc,

Thanks for the response. I guess it's perspective as my hair loss to me feels like a lot. I'm gun shy about Minoxidil, and I am going to try to get a prescription for 5mg Finasteride next week as it's $21 for 100 tablets at Costco, which is a deal. Hopefully between Nizoral twice a week (Suave in between) and Finasteride, I'll maintain or have thick hair on the top of my head again. If I'm not satisfied, I'll try and add Minoxidil to the equation. If I can't get the prescription from the doctor, I'll just buy it on the net I guess.

Either way I will document the first year on it.

The website inhousepharmacy has fincar made by Cipla which is a billion dollar Indian Pharma company in case you can't get a scrip. Thousands of male pattern baldness sufferers get their finasteride from there and quarter them with excellent results
