Help me make a Regimen

Hey all,

I am 20 going on 21 in a few days. I've been thinning since Summer of 2003. It all started off by noticing a lot of hair in my hats, which I shrugged off as nothing.

Fast forward to now and I'm a diffuse thinner with receeding temples, about a NW2.

I had been using Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner for about 7 months, then I switched to Revivogen Shampoo and Conditioner for about the last 3 months. My thinning has slowed down from the initial beginning phases, but I've been left with a lot less density on the top and continually receeding temples. The "tuft" of my hair got extremely bad about 7 months ago but has regained it's composure haha.

I'm fed up with it and I know I need to do more, but I'm not sure what. I was visiting the dermatologist last week and the only options he gave me were Propecia or Minoxidil. I would rather not be on the Propecia because of my age and the side effects.

The minoxidil would be an option, but I've heard that you should try other things and almost use it as a last resort.

I was thinking, Folligen Spray, Nizoral (2x weekly), continuing my Revivogen Shampoo, but adding their topical as well.

I'm just at my wits end with this and would like to do something to control it before it destroys me inside as well as out. I'm constantly making sure my hair is covering the spots even when my hair isn't styled. I wear hats a good majority of the time also to hide it.

Thanks for any advice you have.

severe side effects on propecia are very rare (less than 2%). jump on propecia. give it one year. the earlier you start finasteride more hair you can keep and maintain. minoxidil is for regrowth and can postpone your balding by few years. if you add finasteride and if you are good responder you will be nw2 for the next few decades hopefully.

Hmm, I've just heard a lot of not so good things. Once on Propecia or Minoxidil, I'll pretty much need to take them as long as I want to keep my hair, correct? What's the longest span of time you know of anyone being on finasteride?

although the above statement is true, it is somewhat misleading.

Total sexual side effects run at less than 2% (Mercks figures so take them with a pich of salt).

This 2% will include watery semen, mild testicular pain, reduced ejeculate etc etc, not what I would term 'severe'. The majority of these side effects will subside with continued use.

cj if you want hair for life you have to take any of this treatment for life. even if you have a hair transplant, you need finasteride to keep what you added using hair transplant and other hairs.

Wow, so would you actually reccomend someone my age to begin taking this drug?

On hair loss forums I guess ?

Much like doctors waiting rooms are hardly the place to gauge the health of the nation, hair loss forums are awash with worry, rumour and fear, it goes with the territory.

Read the trial data, this is a better reflection of these drugs.

This is true of many many medications (but not all).

If I were to tell you that you will need to take a block of medicated glycerine, lather with clean water and apply vigrously to your face, not missing behind your ears) at least once a day for the rest of your life just to keep your face clean will that put you off washing ?

around 15 years on 5 time the dose needed for male pattern baldness ( BHP patients )

If you are worried about finasteride there are other topical anti-androgens to consider.

Well, mostly my mom doesn't want me to be on it haha. She wants grandchildren she says :p.

I do that currently to keep my face free of acne anyways :p.

So this person that you know of who had been on it for 15 years, did he have nice hair ;)? Haha, all jokes aside, did he have any negative effects from this ongoing medication?

I was refering to the 650, 000 men in 25 countries who use Proscar (five times the amount of finasteride in propecia) on a daily basis for the last 15 years.

If you don't want to use finasteride you may need something else to stop the DHT attacking you follicles.

Any reccomendations on that?

Or should I not bother without finasteride?

I am probably not the person to ask as I use finasteride.

But maybe you should look into spironolactone, Azelaic Acid, Trocomin etc

Have a look in the Men's Treatments section, stick some posts up and avoid unproven snake oil !!

Folligen will do little to help you situation if used only with Nizoral, it is a good addition to things like finasteride but not good enough on its own.

Nizoral is a mild anti-angrogen in its own right, so go get som from your local grocery store.

Hair loss is a multifaceted problem which inevitably shrinks follicles but dht is not the only issue. HE could approach his problem by using retinoic acid topically to reduce sebaceous influence which does a great job of storing dht in the scalp where it can continue to hurt follicles.Inflammation is def an issue with hair loss so use folligen.

How do you cut the pieces into sixths exactly?

I'm interested in hearing how your experience is, im thinking about doing something along the same lines.

Also, has anyone here been or know anyone thats used minoxidil for more than 10 years?

How long have you been taking it? Are you using anything else in addition to it?
