This is reply is going to be long, but short answer: No, you are not balding. Your hairline is in tact, and the density of our hair is good.

As a perspective medical student with quite a few Dermatologists in the family, I have asked around and have done plenty of research and studies regarding hair loss, particularly Male-pattern baldness. The fine, short strands of hair along your hairline are called transition hairs AKA baby hair. Baby hairs are just hair follicles that for reasons that are not completely known yet, never completely transitioned into terminal hairs (AKA the Long and regular hairs that are on the scalp). Some people have baby hairs, some people don't. My cousin who is a dermatologist says that most men who have baby hairs don't really notice it until they are in their early twenties and examining their hairlines much more closely, so they go to him freaking out because they think that they are going bald. Others notice it at first when they grow their hair long because of the noticeable difference in length. The baby hair will most likely fall off as your hairline starts to mature. Which brings me to my second point...

Your hairline hasn't even matured yet. Do you know how I know? Because the hairline on your temples (the the side of your head) have not receded yet, nor have you lost those baby hairs. This means that your hairline is still juvenile. Most men, even those who never ever go bald lose about 1/2 inch to an inch of hair along their entire hairline on the top and on the temples some time usually between the ages of 19-30. . This means that on the Norwood scale, they go from Norwood 1 to 2, and stay at Norwood 2 their entire life. This is means that they are going from a juvenile hairline to a mature hairline. In fact, out of the entire population of men who never go bald, only less than 10% of them never have their hairline mature, and keep their juvenile hairline. So you will know that your hairline is starting to mature when those baby hairs fall out (if they ever mature).

Point three: If you are convinced that those those small strands of hair along your hairline are not baby hairs because you are 110% that you have never had them until recently, then are most likely new hairs that are growing as a result of you putting your long hair in a ponytail or pulling on/styling your hair too tightly or roughly. if you do either of those things, the hair along your hairline will be the first to break off. And that will explain why they are very short; because they are regrowing. ask yourself if you do any of those things.

Bottom line, short strands never indicates balding. Balding happens when the hairs along your hairline start to miniaturize, and then completely fall off. Miniaturization refers to individual strands of hair on your scalp decreasing size in its diameter/thickness, not its length. I see no signs of miniaturization on your scalp, either. Do not start compulsively pulling out your hair, either to look for miniaturized hair. That is pointless. Also, don't freak out if you see hair fall out and on your hand as you take showers. a healthy head of hair is supposed to lose 100-125 strands of hair each day, most of which falls out while you are taking a shower and washing your hair. you should start to get concerned only if the hair-loss is so severe that it is clogging your drain vary badly on a daily basis. That is a sign of balding.

If you are still worried, make an appointment with your dermatologist. But rest assured, you most likely have nothing to worry about. My hairline is exactly like yours and I freaked out, also. But after a year of constant examination and seeing Dermatologists, I have realized that I wasted time worrying for no reason. The foremost indicator of balding for someone with a true widows peak like yours and mine is extreme temple recession past the point of a maturing hairline. So enjoy your full head of hair while you have it, and style it a billion different ways, and dye it a million different colors. Get off this site. I hope this helped.
