Help! 17 And Going Crazy! Been Denied A Prescription!

Hello!

im 17 and have had thinning hair for the last year. My dad lost all of his hair by the time he was 24 - so not much time left for me seeing as i hit puberty at ten!!

My main areas of concern are uneven hairline, not too badly receeding hairline, thinning at the sideburns (biggest worry) and thinning on the top right and left sides.

Went to the GP today who said yes he agrees I will end up loosing my hair. I asked him for a private prescription for anything to help or slow down hairloss. He said he wouldn't because "the risks greatly outway the benefits" and "nothing has proven effective against hair loss" - I was thinking surely the risk assesment should be a personal choice for me to make?

Considering buying illegal prescription from the internet or something but scared about what I would be getting?

Any ideas?? Please help! Am very worried about this!

Thanks
:)

if i were you i would try topicals first, since you are young and probably still growing. maybe if topicals can help you keep some hair you can add a DHT blocker like finasteride or dutasteride later on.

oh, and use nizoral shampoo a few times a week.

Wuh? Don't you mean he should get on a DHT blocker first and then use topicals as a last resort? Once you start on topicals like Rogaine (which is really the only useful one) or maybe spironolactone you're stuck with them and they are a pain in the ***. What you just advised him to do is the exact opposite of what most people on this forum would advise. My advice would be If you see rogaine in a dark alley, run the other way!

at the moment I'm really looking to thicken my hair as much as possible and at least slow down hair loss - maintain the temples and hairline. Basically just to thicken the sideburns is my main concern, because even my partner has noticed. Its only obvious in sunlight when it passes through the thinner hair.

my doctor said hold on 10 years and he gaurantees there is a hormone treatment that will come out and regrow hair back to how it was - feeling sceptical about that solution. He said I just need to learn to cope with it and learn to be happy with myself - which is easier said than done and not the solution I want!

Just feel too young for this. :(

you're dumb

he's only 17. if he wants to treat his hairloss now, it's topicals or nothing. otherwise he can wait until he's finished growing and then start messing with his hormones.

Wow, ok so yer worried about your friggen sideburns that look a little thin in the sunlight? I have a bald spot you can see from space...go enjoy your life man, but watch your hair closely. When you have REAL signs of balding then think about getting on a DHT blocker. Sheesh. :hairy:

Hey dietcola,
Im only 17 but also hit puberty at ten... Ive stayed the same height and shoe size for 4 solid years! I think my growing phase has stopped really as I haven't changed size at all!

With this shampoo, do the effects or benefits dissapear like they do if you use finasteride/mino?

Thanks for your help guys

Hey Balth06,
My signs are obvious, and im only 17 and things are destined to get progressively much much worse! I mean my dad lost most of his hair by 24!!!! the future looks bleak.
I keep my hair spikey: theres a section on the right side of my hair that wont spike up anymore becos its 2 thin... u can see and feel the difference! the signs are worse than a lot of 30 year olds!

re:

Mr. bath, you are right in that any attempt to battle male pattern baldness begins with a DHT blocker, however, in youngandscared case he is too young to begin finasteride so his only route is topicals.
I would not want my child to be in finasteride at 17, its just too early. If you want to use rogain and nizoral then go right ahead. Then at 19 you can start a DHT blocker.
What is most important is that you do not allow male pattern baldness to take over your life. This is simply a genetic condition that does not define an individual unless they let it define them. Keep your hair trimmed nice and short and go out and enjoy yourself.

im based in the UK balth - so an American prescription wouldn't be of any use? I know what you mean Johnny24601, but at this age a lot is based on apperance. I live in central London, used to work (underage) on the club scene and socalise a lot in a big network in clubs and bars throughout central. Its shallow... but with my kind of lifestyle looks really are everything. GP refused me anti-depressants as well :(

Yea johny you have a good point. But this guy says he started puberty at 10...and what’s more he thinks he is done developing.
I read so often on here people saying I wish I had started finasteride sooner when I was younger.
I personally wish I had started finasteride when I was 18. His choice though. If he really does have the same pattern as his father who went totally bald by 24, and not just thinnng sideburns  chances are good he has very aggressive hairloss and the sooner the better. His choice though.

Don't do anti depressents that's a bad move and many stimulate hair loss.

You could get on a small dose of finasteride 0.25mg. You can get this from Inhouse pharmacy on the web a generic finpecia and it won't cost much at this dose.

Get on finasteride right now!!! If i were you with no money problems i would go to dutasteride. It's a safe drug and you're 17. You'll have no problems.

Problems you'll get later if you dont take the meds.

Consider also the combo oral spironolactone+finasteride/dutasteride.

I would wait a bit. Use nizoral for SURE and maybe use minoxidil if you're worried. Then start an internal at like 19. Hopefully you shouldn't lose too much hair by then.

By the way your story is almost 100% like mine (my dad lost his hair same exact age, i have the exact same thinning sideburns, and started loosing at 16 too).

Perhaps give us some pics for better judgement.

If you have a really strong family history id use propecia. Its safe. Theres as much evidence as a drug will ever have it is. Theres people that have been using 10 years longer then you. When they discover something bad you are 10 years behind and can stop. Its a personal choice I would choose propecia is there really any other real option?

18 is not too young to start finasteride. It's not like a few years later the sides will be less severe or anything.

wow - everyone thinks I should do different things! Basically I just really want to at least hang on to what I have for a long time - longer than 24 thats for sure. Im not expecting to be able to halt hair loss or anything because the family history of it is so strong and aggressive. Im worried about buying from the net though - because you can never really tell what you are getting - right?

Im going to post a few pictures on this post so that you guys can see and hopefully tell me what you think I should do based upon that. Ill have the camera by Friday latest.

Thanks for your help everyone :)
