I have that white seb derm type crap. Why does it get much worse after not using shampoo for say 2 or 3 days? It gets a lot more oily but also a lot more white crap. So 5 ar type 1 causes seb derm? its the sebaceous glands making that? so inhibiting type 1 with something like dutasteride is the only way to stop the white oily chunks of whatever it is?

I dont know. I know its important this white stuff because my head itches constantly and my hairloss is about 3 times worse then my brothers at the same age i was and we have little or no hairloss in my family. I guess im lucky. I just wish someone figured out what this white crap is and most importantly the best way to completely stop it. It must be caused by something.

The white crap you refer to is sebum... the skin of those who suffer from seb. dermatitis produces too much sebum, it's that simple. It is an inherited condition but it can be helped with a proper diet = no sugar, white rice, white bread etc. and lots of anti-inflammation foods like green tea, apples, fish oil etc. More info on diet here: http://www.metabolismadvice.com/anti_inflammatory_food/.

It's very important that you wash your scalp every day. Use nizoral or some other "hard" anti-seborrheic dermatitis shampoo about twice a week and some mild balancing shampoo on off days. Let the hard stuff sit on your head for 2-5 mins before rinsing for it to have a real effect on removing the sebum. The balancing shampoo doesn't need to be in your head for long, I just rinse it off after 10-20 seconds because I don't want to imbalance my sensitive scalp skin with exaggerated shampooing. My scalp feels much better than it did a couple of months ago, it's still not perfect but now I can live with it.

If anyone wants to correct me, feel free 'cause I'm not claiming to be an expert in this area, I just wanted to share something that helped me.

I have the same problem and GrowHairGrow gave some pretty good advice. Personally, I have found that the T/Gel Extra Strength with coal tar is the shampoo that best controls the excess sebum for me. I use it about twice a week like he said. I don't use Nizoral simply because it irritates my scalp, but that works for a lot of people, as does prescription Loprox shampoo or piroctone olamine shampoo for some. What balancing shampoo do you use on the off-days, GrowHairGrow?

Currently I'm using this one: http://sim.fi/en/products/system4/shampoo3/. It's a Finnish brand, active ingredients are piroctone olamine and climbazole. I'm thinking of also trying their shampoo for seb. dermatitis with shale oil. That oil ingredient sounds good. It's this: http://sim.fi/en/products/system4/shampoo4/. I can't use nizoral either, because it irritates sh*t out of my scalp, I guess it's bad for ppl with seb. derm? Right now I'm using a Swedish shampoo called Selukos 1-2x week for removing the sebum.

A friend of mine with SD is now free of it for almost 2 years, his SD was caused of injury to the head, he used coconut oil 2 times a week on his head for 3 weeks and after 3 applications (1 week and half) his SD was completely clear.

:)

GHG: SD doesnt have to be inherited, it's caused by bacteria/fungus fixing the underlying cause in the scalp will get SD "cured" and your brittle hairs in SD area should become thick again..

u take finasteride dont u? Did finasteride help at all with the sebum? or the scalp itch? I have both and i know thats why im losing hair unless its from dht that caused the over production of sebum in the first place. I have been debating starting propecia. I have a very bad itch and lots of sebum and im pretty sure im losing hair very slowly where i have lots of white scaly stuff my hair is oily and miniaturizing but I guess that happens for a mature hairline too.

Intesting remark. Also Pure Jojoba oil as a lotion can be useful to treat SD and remove hardened sebum in scalp.

In my opinion sebum is vital for a healthy hair but its overproducttion and accumulation is negative. Passing the time, sebum change significativately, physical, chemical an biological, it is not only change its reological properties but its chemical and biological signals.
