Has it ever been established why only the front/top/crown is affected by male pattern baldness?

and not the back and sides.

I've heard of the Galea theory - but are there any proven theories?

there's a layer of muscle under the scalp which exactly matches the pattern of hairloss in male pattern baldness - so people have hypothisised that it may have soomething to do with it

I'd be interested in finding this out too. There must be some reason for there being a pattern, rather than just age related thinning all over. Damned if I know though!

Come on guys don't be silly. We know it's because it's genetics. DNA in those areas is responsible for producing 5-ar enzyme where normally this doesn't happen in great amounts in these areas, usually it happens in places like prostate tissue. You won't ever cure baldness. NEVER. The problem will still be there you will simply be taking something to mask it and prevent it.

Wouldn't it be cool if the pattern was reverse, ie you lose the hair on your sides and back but the top and front stays intact?

true, i used to have the fade too, ****in badass cut

however, in this alternate reality it still has all the same principles of hair loss i.e. happens more often as you get older therefore it wud still have the same connotations i guess

altho this time it wud be the same as an established haircut haha

ive said before its weird how the inverse of hair loss is a haircut (the fade)

Too true! To think that my hair was so thick that I needed the undercut, lol! Even with my minimal loss, I couldn't pull that style off now!

No just that my hair would just seem super thin without the hair underneath it to add some volume. I don't always do the fringe down I have kind of had it like a quiff which shows off my hairline. It only looks thin close up, just wish I could sort my temple points out, but they've always been pretty thin too.

Something I never gave any thought to. Otherwise I'd have been covering up my big forehead years ago ;)

I used to have a centre part when I had my undercut, that was the nearest I came to a fringe. When I was around your age, I'd gone for short and spikey, trying to go for a similar haircut to the one Brad Pitt has in Fight Club. Plus there was the whole nu-metal spikey style lol!

It was massive over here from the late 90's up to about 2004/2005 when the emo thing came in. I used to have the spikey bleached hair, eyebrow and nipple pierced lol! Awww I feel old now :/

Talk about a throwback. Bleached hair was the in-thing back in those days. I remember wanting it after seeing, I think Rhys Ifans, pulling it off even though he has blonde hair anyway. I can't imagine having bleached hair now though, it just looks silly in my opinion.

I went through all those styles, even did the classic 90's hair part like Matt Damon haha. I'm enjoying it long for now, I'll have to cut it in about a year when I start the interview process.
