Hairloss rate

Hello Forumers, this is my first post.
I am curious how fast I can expect hair loss can progress.

I began losing hair near the end of August, very quickly, and this was apparent because I kept a close buzz cut, either a size 2 or 3 on top.

I now have hair about 2 inches long, which is about the minimum that I need for my scalp not to show. I visited a dermatologist and asked her if my rapid hair loss would continue, but she did not believe that my hair could appreciably thin in a one month span of time, and seemed to think that I only noticed the hair loss once it progressed to a certain point. I find this very hard to believe, since the buzz cut I used to have makes my hair density very obvious and apparent.

So my question is: How long can I expect to hold onto my hair? I am 21 years old, and my hair thinning, which is, I'd estimate at least a 50% drop in density across the entire top, occurred in a 1 month period of time. Will my hair be completely gone within a year? 5 years? 20 years?

For background, my father is the youngest person in my family to experience hair loss, which he said started at the age of 37. No one else in my immediate family had noticeable hair loss before 40, although my second cousin lost his hair in his early thirties.

Thank you for your help and support

I would think that maybe since you keep it very short you didnt notice that you've been losing it for awhile? Otherwise, if you're accurate with how much you think you've lost..50% would be an EXTREME amount in a monht. I mean you'd have to be losing hair at a startling rate...like just fistfulls coming out haha.

If you have hair loss in your family, it is not a surprise at all that you too would start losing your hair, even at a young age. No one in my family had hair loss at an early age at all...no one even really has significant hair loss...but here i am at 23..in perfect health..losing my hair.

The rate of progression differs in everyone. Some people lose their hair for 20 years and only reach a NW2...some people start losing their hair and are bald in a year or 2.

Thanks Chris, ya gave me a lot to think about...

how about this:
If I've got the sorta hair loss thats gonna kill it all in a year or a few years, does that say anything about how effective or ineffective intervention will be?

i mean i would say if your hair loss is pretty aggressive...get on finasteride as soon as possible...thats your best chance of saving it. Theres no real telling how well you'll respond to it but at least you'll know that youre doing what you can to stop it

there arent many definites with hair loss..its really different for everyone
