I've been loosing a lot of hair on the sides of my head and it doesn't seem to be slowing down. I've been to derms who don't know what it is, they check my TSH then say it might be stress. Can you take a look at the pic and tell me what you think? male pattern baldness? I've also gotten shedding on the back of my head around the hairline. What can I do about it? I use minoxidil on the top of my head right now and occasionally folligen. Should I apply on the sides? It just doesn't seem normal. Thanks!

Thats the temporal points losing them is often part of an excessive degree of hairloss eg nw7 but I dont think thats the case for you as you still have so much on top and they are usualy the last thing to go after the crown.

Thanks for the response.

I am thinning on the top though it's hard to see in the pic. However, you say the sides would only follow the top in hairloss rate? It did start after the top but had caught up and even passed it. So then what to attribute it to? My derm said it wasn't alopecia areata since that is usually completely bald and in well defined areas. I have them on my beard.

Well usually but there is no set pattern for hairloss. But your own male relatives could be a good indication for how your own hairloss pattern will progress.
Did'nt CCS get some of his transplants into this area?

Maybe you should start finasteride and add minoxidil over there.

It's your choice. But I don't think it would make any more damages.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

The problem continues. Now the balding is as low as just above me side burn. And moving back further too. It I pull hair with my fingers just above the ear I get about 10 hairs. They have the white bulbs at the end.

Does anyone else have experience with alopecia areata? Can it thin hair in this way?

Also, does anyone here suffer hair loss from an under-active thyroid? Can it look like this? What did you do?

I'm worried about applying minoxidil there, a shed would really kill it and minoxidil doesn't work as well in these areas, no? I feel there has to be some other explanation than male pattern baldness so I'd like to treat the cause.

Thanks all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Timi,

The shedding has stopped but have you noticed your hair return? I've had this problem over some time now - whether or not to stop the minoxidil. When I switched to 5% the shedding never stopped. I quit minoxidil for a couple of months and the shedding stopped but I went back on out of fear of loosing even more in the long run. According to all here, even if there's consistent shedding there could be more hair overall in the long run (?). Also, that "minoxidil can't hurt". However, I'm still skeptical (but still applying).

Anyway, I just made an appointment with a dern for later today to assess the sides of my head. Hope he has some insight. I'll post his feedback later.

Thanks guys.

So the derm looked and said it didn't look like alopecia areata, or male pattern baldness. But he didn't think it looked like a problem (????). I showed him how many hairs come out when I pull and he said "hairs fall out when you pull on them". They had bulbs on them so he thought it was fine. What is the significance of there being the bulbs on them? Is this a better sign?

Anyway, it continues to get thinner. He also said minoxidil shouldn't make things worse (in general), so i don't know what to tell ya Timi. Maybe there's a link between those who loose hair because of bad hair condition and excessive minoxidil shedding since it can dry your hair out (mine is very dry and damaged). Can anyone recommend good and healthy shampoo and conditioner? I've been using all natural stuff like Jason's Biotin Shamoo and Avalon Organics - Biotin & B complex conditioner. I use T-Sal once or twice a week for dry scalp. Another derm told me Nizoral was probably killing my hair. Hair condition does seem better actually but still it's thin and dry looking.

I've got that type too. I've been on minoxidil for over 10 years now, finasteride for over 5 years now. Hasn't gotten much worse, but it will eventually be gone.
