First off I'm sorry that I'm posting this without searching because i know i will probably find the answer by searching. But i did actually search but there is so much and im just too confused.
Anyways, I'm 19 years old. I have no hair loss yet (well, a slightly maturing hairline is starting (maybe also start of male pattern baldness). The thing is that i know for sure that i will get male pattern baldness because both on my mom and dads side all the men have male pattern baldness (like almost every male back 10 generations (lol). So i know i will get it. My question is, is there anything that i can do to slow it down a little? supplements? massaging? (preferably something inexpensive, cuz im currently VERY low on money with college and car payments) but hey if inexpensive isn't an option i don't mind (as long as i can afford it.)

i just want to try to slow it down if possible...

Thanks a lot!! -Wally

It's funny, Ive just posted in the tell your story section tonight and the siutation you're in now is so similar to me when I was a few years younger.

As far as I know there's not really much you can do to prevent male pattern baldness starting. The cause of it is genetic, so if you have the genes then you have the genes. Supplements and massaging aren't going to stop it happening. I guess there's no harm in making sure you're healthy and have good nutrition ect to make sure that your hair is healthy as well. But yeah, Im sure there are people on this forum who know better than me so I could be wrong, but I think since the cause of male pattern baldness is genetic you really can't do much to prevent it unfortunately. It sucks I know.

However, my advice would be since you know its only a matter of time, to watch your hairline like a hawk. I think maturing hairlines are something older men get, it happens gradually as they age, although I could be wrong on this. If at 19 you think your hairline is changing then I would suspect this is the start of male pattern baldness, especially given your family history. Have you started getting an itchy or painful scalp lately?

If it is male pattern baldness I would get on meds asap, my advice would be to try and keep what you've got while you've still got it because its so hard to regrow hair once its lost, especially on the temples and hairline. I really dont see any logic in waiting until hairloss gets to a point where its progressed and is noticable before you start meds....

A painful and/or itchy scalp is associated with the balding process, so along with what you say about noticing a little hair loss, I hate to say it but it sounds like you are beginning the balding process. Its not a definite obviously, if you upload pics Im sure you'll get a definite answer, but to me it definitely sounds like male pattern baldness.

What meds to take depend on what course of action you wanna take. Would you be happy just to try and maintain what you've got? If so I'd suggest propecia and nizoral shampoo. If you want to try and regrow hair where you've lost some you should definitely consider adding rogaine to your regimen.

You need to make sure that its definitely male pattern baldness obviously, and you'll need to think seriously about any regimen before you begin it. Meds aren't cheap, and ideally you need to give them a year before you decide if they're working or not, so its a long-term commitment that you have to be ready to make. So yeah it can be a hassle, and an expensive one at that, but the way I see it is that if the balding process has started, its only going to get worse if you don't do something about it. Ive read quite a few posts on here from people who have lost a significant amount of hair and wrote that they wished they started meds much earlier. Also, if you're only 19 then you have a really good chance of responding to meds, and if you have lost hair recently then you stand a better chance of regaining it with meds.

Good luck mate.

Start with Nizoral shampoo every 2-3 days. After 6 months assess your situation , if it has got any worse jump on finasteride. You can order cheap generics online. I'm 19 as well , unfortuenatly my hair loss began at 17. The best thing you can do is start early. I don't reccomend jumping on finasteride immediately as it has side effects associated with it. Until you realise that Nizoral can't control your male pattern baldness start using Finasteride.

Good luck.

No you don't. There's no way you can tell if you're going to suffer from male pattern baldness in the future.

Everyone in my family is bald but my brother isn't (I'm not bald either, but only thanks to finasteride :) ). My brother is 34 years old and he still has a full head of hair, no signs of baldness whatsoever.

If you want to take natural supplements and vitamins, that's fine. But don't even think of starting finasteride or minoxidil until you know for sure that you have male pattern baldness. And ALWAYS consult with your doctor (dermatologist) before you start any treatment.

im' fine with the way it is now. Its just a maturing hairline (maybe, could be more based on what u guys think because i dunno )but i was just thinking that it could also be the start of male pattern baldness. Btw, the in the pictures u notice that my right hairline (your left) is higher than the left, well that wasn't recent. Ive had that since i was born.
anyways heres some pictures. I hope they are good enough to tell.

is there any specific nizoral shampoo? because some say 2% or something and others are more/less?
also are there different kinds of propecia?

Thanks a lot :)

ok :) thanks mate
so i have to use nizoral for 6 months? even if i still notice hairloss throughout 6 months i keep at it right? then after that time and still no stop, then i would jump on finasteride? (of course after i see a dermatologist correct?)

Well, i hope ur right and it stops here :p. sadly i don't think i'm lucky
Ya of course, i will def talk to my dermatologist before starting anything, but i wanted some info before going to him.
what kind of natural supplements and vitamins are good to take if you dont mind?

btw... i dont actually think i have itchy/ painful scalp now that i think about it.
It only painful a little after i take off a hat or beanie thats tight, or holding my hair back

ya, i thought i did too, but i couldn't find the topic.
i searched for it, but no luck. guess it got deleted maybe?

nw0? i think that means the type of hairline i have? i cant really google it lol. im not getting anything, and the search here for nw0 isnt getting anything

and ya, i thought it was just a maturing hairline and not really male pattern baldness yet but i wanted to make sure. i just want to catch it before i actually start losing hair, and get male pattern baldness. :)
catch it before it starts

Given what you said about a change in your hairline, and scalp pain it sounded very much like male pattern baldness, but viewing those pics I think you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Maybe you just feel you have pain in your scalp....especially if you're conscious of losing your hair and aware of whats involved. Or maybe its something else entirely. Maybe you do have an inflammed scalp, in which case Nizoral would help, but I really don't think you have male pattern baldness.

Of course definitely keep a close eye on things, when it starts, you'll know about it, and the best thing you can do is get on treatments as soon as it has started. But for now, yeah just chill and enjoy not having a need for meds!!
