The issue i guess in everyone's mind is whether the active ingredients in Nizoral contain Antiandrogen properties or antinflammatory properties...or a combination of both...

If this could be verified, i guess we will know of there is a link between inflamation and male pattern baldness...

i think what matters most is...
whether this nizoral shampoo is really effective in preventing hair loss as stated by thread starter.
am using 1% for me.
head aint so damn itchy..maybe 1 teenie weenie bit...there is :)
but hair's kinda dry at the moment

I think it is not only important that it works but how it works. At least it will be useful to future research of a cure for Hair loss. A 100 years ago no one knew what caused hair loss..Then it was discovered that DHT was the culprit and propecia was discovered..

till now a clear relation between androgens, inflammation and immune response of the body have not been establisged. I think it is only important that researchers should have every nook and corner of the issue covered.

nizoral everyday will weak havok on your hair... and I'm not entirely sure how nizoral would prevent male pattern baldness..

How will it wreak havoc on my hair?

Using it everyday is too much.. I suggest once ever 2 or 3 washes, with a solid conditioner. Otherwise your scalp and hair will look totally dried up

why the hell do people think nizoral will help with hair loss?! its a damned dandruff shampoo.

The active ingredient in Nizoral (ketoconazole) has been shown to have antiandrogenic properties, which _may_ be the reason why it showed favorable effects on male pattern baldness in a small French study.

Yeah, and hair follicle status even improved in the group using ketoconazole shampoo, which is a step up from maintenance. Improvement continued until 15 months into the study, at which point a plateau was reached. The authors' conclusion of why ketoconazole was effective seemed a bit far-fetched though (IIRC); didn't it? I'm not even comfortable guessing how ketoconazole works, at this point. ;-)

Ketoconazole shampoo was also effective in another study:

Khandpur, S., M. Suman, et al. (2002). "Comparative efficacy of various treatment regimens for androgenetic alopecia in men." Journal of Dermatology 29(8): 489-98.

Although it was not used by itself in that study, it had a positive effect when combined with finasteride, when compared to finasteride alone.

I only use it once every two days or so. I think I forgot to mention that. Either way, thanks for the advice.

I intend to add a good conditioner on the off days.
