Hairline Receded Around Ears - What Is Going On?

Hi everyone,

I am new here and I wanted to ask a specific question about my hairline around my ears. Just to give you some background info, I am currently probably about a NW2 / NW3. My hairline receded fairly aggressively in my early 20s, but then pretty much stayed put for the next 5 years or so. I am now 28 and have recently noticed a bit of thinning around the crown, which has started me worrying about my hair again. Also, I don't take any meds and am undecided yet whether that is a route I want to go down.

However, the main reason I am here, is because I have also noticed that my hairline around my ears appears to have receded a lot. I am unsure whether to put this down to male pattern baldness, or if it could be related to some other underlying issue that I might, hopefully, be able to resolve. Having googled around, I have struggled to find any similar cases to compare myself with.

I'll attach a couple of photos and if anyone could offer some insight as to what is going on, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks!

Woah, I've never seen a condition like that before. I wish I can comment on that but for me that is rare. Usually men lose around on top and temples, those sides and back doesn't lose hair even if you have male pattern baldness.

Yeah I am not quite sure what to make of it. I don't know if it's possible that I just naturally have a high hairline around my ears and have only just noticed. I think maybe it could also be a case of retrograde alopecia or alopecia areata, neither of which I know much about.

I think I noticed the same thing on myself after I was wearing headphones for a few hours. I don't think its necessarily recessed its just you probably never noticed that area before. Also the skull is always growing especially during puberty so those areas could easily have expanded over the last few years without you really realising.
