I don't think the application of SMP will damage the adjacent hair. I've seen a few people on different SMP forums that use SMP to create a more dense/fuller look by adding it to hair transplanted hair or the own natural hair. Similar to using a dermatch but without the hassle. Using SMP with existing hair is a case by case basis it seems though. If you have a diffuse hairloss pattern than it can be used to fill in the blanks but if you are going bald in patches or plan on extending SMP beyond your current hairline than it may not be ideal.
I have heard that the removal of SMP can damage some adjacent hair, in some cases. I've heard some people get laser and not lose any of their original hair though. I think it depends on the laser being used I think but not 100% sure on that.
