Hi all,

I noticed my hair has slowly receding a couple of years ago but didn't pay much attention. But in the last six months it has really accelerated,to the point if run my hand through my hair 3-5 hairs fall out. Its not too noticeable with with wax or gel in my hair but it is only getting worse.

I work night shifts so I wonder if this has effect.

I have gone to a few hair loss clinics but have been put off by the high prices and the sales tactics.

My question what is the best way to slow down/stop a receding hair line. What works or has worked for you ?

Saw Palmetto does it actually work?
Will taking Propecia bring side effects that are irreversible ?
Do the propecia side effects, effect all users ?

and minoxodill, does that work ?

Cheers in advance

You state you have visited hair loss clinics. Have they checked your scalp for miniaturization?

Side effects are reversible in about 95% or higher of people who get them. And about 95% of people who take finasteride don't get side effects.

Minoxidil works for about 70% of people. It strengthens your hair, makes it grow for longer, and can bring miniaturized hair back to life. It doesn't stop the balding process so you will still go bald but might buy yourself a few years. Much longer if you combine it with finasteride.

Saw Palmetto works about half as well as finasteride although this isn't for sure as it's much less studied. It likely comes with about half as much risk of sides as finasteride.

Is Minoxidil safer than finasteride ? also what is the best Saw Palmetto shampoo on the market. Thanks for the advice

Minoxidil doesn't change your hormones therefore it's side effects are completely different and generally considered 'safer'. The most common side effects are skin issues but even they are rare. Some people report irregular heartbeat and stuff but I'm not even sure these are true.

I'm not sure what the best saw palmetto shampoo is. I use https://ogxbeauty.com/hair/niacin-caffeine/

Both the shampoo and conditioner. It contains saw palmetto along with caffeine which has proven effects on DHT in vitro as well as some research showing it helps with hair loss somewhat.

Thank you again. What is the best way to take Minoxidil ? Is there an amount that I should or shouldn't take ?

I just follow the instructions on it, although I use slightly less than they say as I found that my eyes would get irritated using the directed amount.

If you notice you get any side effects just reduce your dose before giving up.

If you are reducing the dose try to still apply twice a day as I believe this works better than just doing it once a day.

Sorry for all the questions. But are any brands better or more effective ?

Cheers

I have read Kirkland is the best. But yes there are differences between brands, I've just used the standard Regaine (Rogaine outside of Ireland). But probably will get Kirkland when I run out.

So long as it's 5% minoxidil it should work about the same, but I have heard that some are slightly better than others.

Yes, 2 months in on minoxidil, nizoral, and saw palmetto (not sure if this is doing anything). My shedding has cut down to normal levels and I actually see new hairs along my hairline. None on my temples though, but so long as I can keep my current hair until there are better treatments I'm happy. (Fingers crossed)

Im losing my hair rapidly on the temple area ,so hopefully it grows there. So you use nizoral and saw palmetto shampoos daily ?

I use Nizoral every 3 days. Saw Palmetto and Caffeine shampoo on the other days, and Saw Palmetto and Caffeine conditioner everyday.

I also take Saw Palmetto extract supplements everyday. Because of the following study.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23298508

A later study assessing usage of 320mg saw palmetto over the course of two years in otherwise healthy men with male pattern baldness noted that 38% of subjects treated with saw palmetto reported an increase in hair growth which performed less effectively than 1mg finasteride (66%); saw palmetto appeared to work primarily at the crown of the head whereas finasteride was effective at the crown and frontal regions

No idea really. There's probably some benefit in it but I've never researched it.

In my opinion without using finasteride you willcontinue to lose hair. Saw p is rubbish and little more than a vitamin.

Yes minoxidil can help with regrowth but as said above it doesnt stop hairloss so when you stop alot of hair can fall quickly bringing you to the place you would have been without it.

You need a dht blocker to stop hair loss from actually happening and destroying your follicles.
