Hair Grows To A Certain Length Then Falls Out...different Type Of Thinning?

Hi there

I’ve been thinning on top for about 10 years and have used minoxidil 5% for a couple of years with ‘some’ success. Get some regrowth but still very thin compared to normal. I’ve got exactly the same active / inactive follicles as my father….so it’s definitely genetic as opposed to other factors.

My question is this. I recently tried growing what hair was left to see if it would look a bit better (normally shave my hair) and noticed that 'some' hair grow to their full length and i can literally count those hairs on 2 hands. However in direct sunlight, i recently noticed that the rest of the hair (most but not all) 'do' exist but don’t grow beyond a certain length as i think they keep falling out after reaching a critical point. Out of curiosity i was reading about how body hair knows ‘when’ to stop growing as opposed to head hair which normally goes on and on. Body hair grows a bit then falls out to be replaced by other hair giving you the illusion that its the same hair and stops at a certain length. Anyway, getting to the point - it ‘seems’ as though this is happening to my head hair (maybe?) but the loss supersedes the gains per unit time. Seems weird that i’ve got a fair load of hair, but it grows then falls out...repeatedly, so it stays thin - even though the follicles 'seem' to be permanently active.

With this in mind, i was wondering whether this is a ‘different type’ of thinning which may have some sort of treatment other than the usual minoxidils etc. I’m not going any drastic route, really i’m not *so* bothered about it - but if something could be done, then better than not! And i’m not into witchcraft, jizz, lemon and egg mixes etc.

Thanks for any recommendations! Cheers...
