Well after a year and almost 9 months I think I'm giving it up. Had no noticeable shed until I hit the one year mark when out of no where I was losing HAND FULLS OF HAIR. That insane shed lasted from November 6 til about January 2nd and since that time I've been shedding 40 or so in the shower and about the same blow drying my hair gently. Every time I run my hands through my hair about ten come out.. My hairline and behind thinned out considerably so finasteride has actually helped no where. I only went on for light temporal recession and damn me for that. My hair won't stabilize and just keeps shedding. I also had scalp pain/soreness/itch since that shed.

I'd try dutasteride but from my understanding, it makes you shed heavily in the temple areas. I'm now in the transplant market thanks to finasteride effing me. I try not to think that it was from finasteride, but my brother has a receding hairline and I've asked him if he ever had itching burning or any of that and he simply said hell no.

My suggestion to anyone with light hairloss and a good head of hair, don't use internal AA's.

are there any physical symptoms of inflammation on your scalp due to finasteride like acne, seborrheic dermatitis? this is what finasteride has given me

I'm sorry to hear about your experience Ziggyz123. I wonder if it is possible that you were naturally meant to bald super aggressively around this time and finasteride is actually maintaining your hair?

Yeah, at first my derm suggested that I had seborrheic dermatitis which I've never had in my life. I was getting occasional pimples along my hairline as well which was also never and issue.

Yeah I mean, my brother has a receding hairline, but he has different hair and always had a large widows peak. My hair pretty much thinned out all over and now I am having trouble even finding my part because my hair is now so wispy that it is falling to the sides of my head instead of laying towards the front or brushed over the top of my scalp.

Ziggyz123,

I'm sorry about your situation. If I'm interpreting correctly from what I read in the very first sentence, you took Finasteride for one year and nine months. If that's the case, you obviously did not respond to the medication, it's not that it made your hair worse.

If you're going to take Duasteride, it still could not do anything for you since it's similar to Finasteride. Now, I'm not discouraging you to try the medication, it won't hurt to try. For some it still won't do much, it may work a little better, and for some it works incredibly well. Also the thing going around that Dutasteride can worsen your hairline and/or temples is completely false and has never even been proven as a possibly that the medicine can do that. I suggest to check out an excellent success story from a member here by the name of 'nickypoos' who made a full and perfect recovery from taking Dutasteride only. He was thinning and receding badly, then had full density and temples restored. Here is the link to the story if your interested:

Also, using an internal anti-androgen such as Dutasteride or Finasteride, more specifically 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, are going to be our current best options for someone who still has a good head of hair.

Hey man, when I first was prescribed finasteride, I actually showed my derm nick's story. I don't know why, but I had serious scalp pain when I lost my hairline on finasteride so I think the hormonal change isn't agreeing with me and I'm literally frightened that dutasteride would kill me. I read so much about shedding in the temples on dutasteride and my guess is that it's because the hair up front is actually weaker and when the body is adjusting, it's causing an imbalance and those hairs take a hit. Right now, if I get worse, my life would pretty much be ruined. Have you heard of this happening and then dutasteride saving hair?
