no 220 is too much. i know from a hair transplant specialist who measured the hair of his cousin who has brad pitt hair who got 190 hairs/cm².

so maybe thats average. but i think you need far less for a full look.

why is this extremely rare? i thought it was common wisdom that full density on a caucasian was equivalent to 100 grafts/cm2, which, with anywhere between 2.2 and 2.4 hairs per graft, about 220 HAIRS/cm2 makes sense, no?

Apparantly a good surgeon can give you the illusion of normal density with as little as 35 graftspcm2. 35 -50 is the norm for hair transplant's but 75 - 90 is possible.

what density did you got , s.a.f.? and how does it look like?

anyway, i got about 35 grafts in the front, or 40 i dont know exactly. well, if its styled the right way, it looks like normal density (not exactly normal but everyone i asked said they dont see it got hairloss), though i still see the thinning and everyone who knows about male pattern baldness will see it. look my pic, then you know what im talking about.

but thats not enough, 35-40 grafts. you need more if you re young. i think like most hair transplant surgeons suggest, 50-60 grafts will look good and like coverage. you anyway only got 50-55 at your sides so it would match the sides at this density. which i think is ok. you dont need brad pitt hair.

neo1234,

do more research, the sides have way more than 50 follicles percm2

probably nearer to 150

I think I got 40 - 50 but it looks very thin. My problem was that the surgeon had a large area to cover, I'm intending to go back to increase the density.

HUH?? Look, the average starting baseline haircount of all the guys in the huge Propecia phase III trial was 876 hairs per 1-inch circle, which is 171.8 hairs per square centimeter. And those guys were BALDING (Norwood/Hamilton II vertex, III vertex, IV or V)!! :)

Here's a section on average haircounts from a well-known authority on hairloss, Dr. David A. Whiting, MD. This is from the excellent article he wrote a few years ago titled "Male Pattern Hair Loss: Current Understanding" (International Journal of Dermatology 1998, 37: 561-566). I've included the medical references Dr. Whiting cites at the end of the paragraph:

...Regardless of age, balding scalps have a reduced density of terminal hair follicles when compared with non-bald people of the same age. Those aged 30-90 years with normal hair have been reported to have 459 follicles per cm^2, compared with 306 in male pattern hair loss. (30) Recent data suggest that follicular counts in normal adults average 326 per cm^2, and, in Androgenetic Alopecia, 278 per cm^2. (5)
