Graft survival during surgery outside body

Hi,

I did my hair transplant recently and are a little bit anxious. There were only the doctor and one technician which lead to the surgery took a long time >10 hours. Is the grafts surviving that long outside the body or am I just being nervous here?

Regard,
E

Two years on you probably already have your answer, but this question comes up a lot so worth addressing for anyone finding this thread later.

Graft survival outside the body depends heavily on how the grafts are stored. In a basic saline solution, the window is generally considered to be around four to six hours before survival rates start dropping. However, most clinics now use holding solutions like Hypothermal or Plasma Rich in Platelets which significantly extend that window and can keep grafts viable for much longer.

The other factor is whether the grafts were kept cool and moist throughout. Dehydration is the main enemy. A clinic that is careful about storage can manage a longer session without significant survival loss.

One doctor and one technician for a 10-hour session is a legitimate concern, not because of the time alone but because fatigue and reduced precision over that length of time is a real variable. The graft survival question and the quality of placement question are two separate things worth thinking about.

Hopefully your results came in well. If anyone is reading this pre-procedure it is worth asking your clinic specifically what holding solution they use and how they manage long sessions.
