From Dr. Bernstein's office, who did my corrective procedures. When i saw him, he criticzed me for using fincar, so I got on propecia. after I realized it wasn't doing anything, 5 years later, I went back to fincar. I get an email today, saying basically you can save money by using generic finasteride, but it says he doesn't recommend finpecia (and I presume also fincar) because India does things differently.. Should we be worried? He wasn't trying to sell Merck stuff. He was saying generic is the way to go, but US made generics.

No, you shouldn't worry, the doctor hasn't a clue. Guess what? I get my finasteride from a U.S. pharmacy and it's manufactured overseas. Dr Reddy's labs, based in India, manfactures generic finasteride which is sold in the United States. In fact, alot of generic drugs found in US pharmacies are of foreign origin so if he thinks that just because it's bought in the US, that it's actually made here, he's wrong. I also used Fincar for months and it works fine. It's the same drug regardless of what he thinks.

I'm a little confused. I assumed that the generic drugs we're talking about are not manufactured in the US by US companies because of patent laws.
I thought that most of the generics are produced in India due to a loop hole in Indian patent laws that allows reproduction of the drug providing they use a different process.
A US company in the US would not be permitted to produce a generic unless permitted under liscence or following expiry of the patent.
Either one of us has missed the plot or you should find another doctor!

The patent on Proscar (finasteride 5mg) has now expired so generic versions can be produced legally. The patent on Propecia won't expire until about 2014.

finasteride is finasteride regardless. You just have to make sure you get it from a legitimate source so you know that your not paying for a placebo.
