Howdy all. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I am 29 and finally fed up with 5% Minoxidil and Nioxin. I've been using both--not perfectly following the directions--for about 8 years. Perhaps they have slowed my hairloss, but not satisfactorally so.

I am going to make an appointment with my GP (in California, US) to get a prescription of finasteride, however, I don't want to go in unarmed. I've read a lot of posts on these boards already and I guess some doctors are pretty ignorant.

Any tips about what I should expect? Do they usually refer you to specialists? Will they perform blood tests? Are they relucant to prescribe finasteride? What arguments might my doctor(s) make against using finasteride that I should be prepared for?

I know these are a lot of questions. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I got my prescription from a dermatologist that I was seeing about my acne (which I got rid of).

I don't think that the doctor will require a blood test.

My dermatologist said didn't give me a hard time at all about the propecia. He just told me about the possible sexual side effects and that if I experience them, they'll go away once I stop treatment. (Only 2-4 percent of people get side effects), I've had none after 2 and a half months treatment.

Sometimes doctors don't want to prescribe finasteride because they are afraid you will get side effects. Tell him/her only 2-4 percent get side effects.

Also, some say long-term effects are unknown.
I think finasteride has been available in Proscar form since ?1992?
It's a safe drug.

If you want to cut costs on finasteride. Try to get your derm to give you Proscar, then get a tablet cutter and cut the pills in forths, taking 1.25 mg finasteride everyday.

Also, don't stop your Minoxidil regimine. Get your finasteride, and continue with minoxidil.

Many of the hairs that Minoxidil has grown, may shed for good if you stop using it.

Expect a good doctor to take u seriously from the start. no need to go to a specialist in most cases, i went tho anyway before seeing the doctor. yeh performed blood test to see if i had any deficiencies. i dont believe they will be reluctant to prescribe finasteride. my Doctor sed hed never seen any whos had side effects or something. he may ask u to go back and see him after 2 months to tell him of any unwanted side effects. this is what mine did then he gave me 4x3 month prescriptions and said come back in a year. good doctor.

my Doctor tugged on my hair to check for Telogen Effluvium. she had never heard of cutting proscar in 4ths, but i made my case and she asked the pharmacist if it was time released. she gave me the proscar prescription after the pharm said it is not time released and is the same drug. she did not refer me for liver tests or mention them. my brother's did.
