Ahmeda - thanks for checking in to my story, I really appreciate your support. You have mine as well.

In reading about your situation it's something I'm scared I'll face someday as well. I've been saving the move to dutasteride for just such an occasion in the future as well. I think I would first try upping the dose of finasteride as others have recommended, possibly to 2.5mg/day. I have read of other people doing a full 5mg proscar daily. I'm not sure, however, that 2.5mg finasteride carries less risk of side effects than .5mg dutasteride. Surely there is some intake of finasteride for which side effects will be more severe than .5mg dutasteride, I'm just not sure where that level is.

Note that I don't have experience with either of these options specifically, it's just what I would, and probably will, do when the day comes that 1.25mg finasteride doesn't cut it for me anymore either - try to increase the dose to 2.5mg finasteride and no more, then see the doctor about trying out dutasteride.

What I do have experience with and would highly recommend is topical spironolactone. I use the S5 spironolactone from this site. I have had absolutely fantastic results with regrowth over the past three months using finasteride, minoxidil, nizoral, and the S5 spironolactone. Of course I can't attribute any of my results to any one thing or another. It's my assumption that finasteride has done the bulk of the work since I never got a minoxidil shed and never saw any of the downy white minoxidil hairs, but if I had to do it all over again I would include the spironolactone every time. It is a well-known anti-androgen, appears to be well tolerated by those who use it topically, and is practical and readily available. I would recommend including it in your regimen, even alongside finasteride or dutasteride. I've written at more length on spironolactone in my story and in the thread at: http://tiny.cc/ng49e.

Hey Ahmed,

My hair loss is kinda like yours, well, yours seems a little worst..lol sorry.

I too have never heard of 'permanent side effects' from Dutasteride. Side effects will be gone once 'Dutasteride' is out of the system (Dutasteride takes longer to leave system than Propecia).

I too made the transition from Propecia to Dutasteride. I did a lot of research like a nerd. Bottom line is Propecia blocks 1 DHT and Dutasteride blocks 2. It's simple math. I didn't have any side effects from Propecia so I was somewhat comfortable making the transition. I'm just surprised Avodart hasn't gotten fda approval for hair loss yet...maybe there is a business reason behind it.

Anyways, I finally got a dermatologist (cause some wouldn't) prescribe me Avodart. Started 3 times a week, then twice and once. I shoudn't have done that but I think I was just trying to see maybe once a week might be sufficient.

Anyways, I'm going to get back to 3 times a week. No more and no less.

Also, Look into Regenepure DR shampoo. It has Ketoconazole. But upto you cause shampoos are just small addition.

Thought I'd share my story.

What is the dosage you are planning to take?

Thanks for your reply lol

I'm thinking of taking 0.5mg Avodart but its hard to get hold of.

how it is working for you?

thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

I am currently on revivogen. I have been on it for a week so new to it but thinking of getting spironolactone.

But i was thinking how I combine all 3, as I also take 5% foam.

as spironolactone is a cream, is it difficult an messy to apply?

do you think it spironolactone and revivogen together is a good combo or just use one at a time?

also which one has the best rep on this form? spironolactone or revivogen ?

lol a lot of questions.

It was working fine until my dumbass thought once a week should be enough..lol. Hair started thinning so I upped it to twice a week recently.

My dermatologist told me thrice a week. I'm going to try twice a week for a while. And then depending on side effects (if I get any) or improvement in hair I'll decide whether to go thrice or stay at twice. But I'm not going more than thrice.

I did have little difficulty getting a prescription for Avodart, but finally found a dermatologist that would prescribe it.

Good luck.

are you based in the UK? if so wanna recommend me to this dermo ? :p

I was going to get 0.5 dutasteride from some dick at Zerining Medical in the UK but he was charging me £400 for the year and told me to take 0.5 every other day.

He was a proper sales person, so couldnt trust him.

I'm sorry buddy, I'm in the US. I have no clue regarding UK.

400 a year is about $650. That's somewhat what I pay in US. My health insurance doesn't cover it, it's all out of pocket.

I guess my only advice is to keep calling around but if you have no luck just get it, few $ here and there is trivial if your trying to save your hair =p

Geeeez! I didn't know dutasteride was so expensive! I just looked and the patent on Avodart is active until 2013, so no generic dutasteride until at least that time and probably longer. Maybe you could get it from some country with poor intellectual property rights, but sadly that's usually highly correlated with poor quality control and consumer protection laws too.

To answer your question about spironolactone: it is a cream (at least the S5 spironolactone from this site that I use is a cream), and should be applied after the minoxidil. I've heard Dr. Lee recommend 10 minutes between minoxidil application and spironolactone application, and I usually wait 10 - 30 minutes until the minoxidil (I use Rogaine foam as well) is dry so it doesn't make a sloppy mess. I thought it was a PITA to apply at first, as it leaves a slight white residue for 30-45 minutes while it's drying, but I've actually gotten very good at the application and use it as my sole styling aid! It's about the same consistency as American Crew Forming Cream (a bit thinner than the Fiber or Pomeade but thicker than a gel) and it dries a little bit stiff but not 'crusty'. I can spike my hair up with spironolactone in, comb it to the side, push it forward, it gives it just enough density and tackiness to be effective for styling while not too stiff to look unnatural. It may just be me though, as my hair is normally really thin and poofy so spironolactone gives it just what it needs.

Revivogen is supposed to have some anti-androgenic properties but I've never seen them disclose exactly what's responsible for doing so. Maybe someone else knows. I think opinions on revivogen are mixed, at best. I haven't used it, because I think that Nizoral accomplishes what I need from a shampoo and finasteride and spironolactone from an anti-androgen, plus that stuff's expensive as heck. Look at my story - I've regrown all that hair for the same price as their 3 month Scalp Therapy system, and I highly doubt it would have had the same result. But to answer your question I do think they would be, at the least, safe to use together.

If you have any other questions about spironolactone I'm happy to answer them. I've put a lot of info about it in my story. It's probably not a miracle in a jar but it's a good +1 when you're comfortably on the big 3.

Good luck my friend!

do you have any pictures of your hair? as I could not see them on your profile. Would be good to see how dutasteride works out for you.

I just created a thread.

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=68635

I'm 35. Started Propecia at 31, nothing before that.

I guess the only positive is that I lose my hair slowly. So I'm just hoping to stretch it for few more years and hope a better product comes out. Like topical CB-03-01.

I just don't like oral medication.
