Going bald or thinning hair?

Hi everyone. My name is James and I'm 20 years old.

Two years ago I began to notice that my hair was starting to fall out, when i got into college. And now whenever I look in the mirror, I can see a lot of scalp specially if my hair is wet.

The thing is, I don't know if I had always been like this or if I just started to notice it now. And i don't know if I'm going bald or if my hair is just thinning.

There are some pictures attached and I would really appreciate if you could help me. (some of them with wet hair)

Well picture 4 isn't overly flattering, but that could just be because your hair is wet and your directly under light. The other ones don't look too bad. Know this, thinning of the hair IS balding. You don't just wake up one morning bald when you had a full head of hair when you went to bed. Thinning hair is the beginning of the balding process. As the hair gets thinner, the hair growth cycles get shorter and shorter whilst the hair continues getting thinner and thinner until it's just not there anymore. It's not something to be ignored. The thinner the hair gets, the less thick it can become whilst on treatment, so acting fast is the key. If your worried, get it checked out by a dermatologist. Balding, much like cancer, if left untreated for a long enough period, it becomes much harder to stop.

Thank you for your time and opinion. You're right, picture 4 was taken under direct light with wet hair on purpose.

But could my hair loss be related to stress, type of shampoo, number of times I wash my hair? Because until two weeks ago i used to wash my hair everyday. Now i try only to wash it 3 times a week. My hair can become very greasy very fast. Plus, when I got into college two years ago I went through a tough (but normal) period of stress and that's when i started to become aware of the amount of hair that was sheding.

My man, get it checked by a dermatologist to be sure, but chances are if you're worried there's usually something to be worried about. Something like 95% of hair loss in men is due to male pattern baldness. It's not because you used too much shampoo, you combed it too hard, or you've been really stessed (telogen effluvium is far less common than male pattern baldness). Occam's razor brother, the simplest solution is usually the right one.
