Getting Propecia

This may be a stupid question... But how do I get propecia? Can a general doctor prescribe it? Do I have to go to a dermatologist? How much do office visits typically cost? How often do I need to go back? How long is the prescription for?

Thanks!

You will need to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. Let him/her assess what is happening to your hair. There is a possibility that it might not be male pattern baldness.

Office visit costs depends on your health insurance.

Propecia in the US costs roughly 50-65 dollars / bottle. Each bottle has 30 pills which lasts you 30 days. You do the math.

Usually the dermatoligist will give you a prescription that will last for 6 - 12 months. My dermatoligist gave it to me for 17 months!

The caviot about this whole situation is the money issues. You might want to ask for proscar. It is a 5mg pill in which you can split into fourths and save money that way. You only need 1mg of Finasteride a day. Perhaps less.

There are also generic brands of these pills. Run a search on generic propecia, generic proscar, finpecia, fincar... Those are ultimately the cheapest and are shipped from India where the pills are made out of the same exact stuff, just different processses are used to manufacture the pill.

I suggest you go to the Doctor first. See what they say...

Good luck!

Thanks

Thanks Portunfio! I'm 25 and have been lucky so far. Never went to the doctor under my own health insurance... I'm not sure, but I'm thinking I may have to pay the full cost of the office visit. I have an HMO so I would need my primary care physician to refer me to a specialist I guess. I was hoping I could just go to my PCP and he could prescribe Proscar, but it sounds like that's not the case? It might be cheaper for me to just visit a dermatologist on my own than to pay for two visits. Health care is so complicated.

I have Kaiser HMO so I have to go to a GP in order to get a referral to a dermatologist. My GP just went ahead and prescribed me the Propecia so didn't need to see a specialist.

Cool

That's good news! Anyone else have an experience with an assigned physician under an HMO prescribing Propecia or Proscar?
