General hair loss and FUT questions

I'm in my early 30's and have been balding for about 10 years. I've never had any sort of treatment, I just use clippers to shave it off. I'm probably going to get an FUT hair transplant at some point in the next year or so.

My father is quite bald, and so while I have significant hair loss - the hair on the top of my head, front, and crown are very thin - I assume I have much more hair loss to come. I've never gotten classified but I think (not sure how accurate my guesses are) I might be a Norwood VI in terms of pattern shape (I have hair on top but its thin), or between V and VI, and my father is more like a VI or VII with basically no hair on top. So I'm wondering about FUT transplants and future hair loss. After my pre-existing hair on top starts thinning out even more, will the grafted FUT hairs look unnatural and out of place next to them?

And what would be the benefits/drawbacks to getting two hair transplants separated by a few years (waiting for more balding to happen), rather than getting one larger preemptive transplant with more grafts in anticipation of future hair loss? Would two transplants lead to a larger total scar area, and what would be the other consideration?

And a few general questions:
  • Before a transplant should you grow your hair or does the doctor shave it down? I think I've read conflicting stories on this, with some saying you should grow your hair so it hides the scars, and others saying their doctors shave it down.[/*:m:m6pkvts4]
  • Since the transplanted hair can take a year to grow in, will it look funny or unnatural during that period? I know that scarring/redness takes some weeks or months to heal, but I mean the hair itself, not the redness.[/*:m:m6pkvts4]
  • How soon after an FUT transplant can you start wearing a hat? Do things like hats have any risk of damaging grafts or causing them to shed?[/*:m:m6pkvts4]
