I recently (for the first time) hired a personal trainer and got serious about lifting weights. I was about 155lbs and 5'11" before beginning with 12% body fat and 27 years old. I have been on finasteride for 1 yr. In the 3 months of training (and consuming more calories and protein than normal through diet and protein shakes) I have gained 20 lbs and my bf % is 14% (which is bound to happen when you are trying to seriously gain muscle). Granted, I don't know how I would have gained if I weren't taking finasteride, but I am not having a problem now.

finasteride helps me gain muscle quicker, professional athletes are banned from taking it as it can give a competitive advantage, that speaks for itself to me

that's the first time I have heard of someone experiencing increased performance from finasteride. I had a serious loss of energy when I first started taking.

I'm very intruiged to hear you say that athletes are banned from taking it. Would you happen to know where you read it - possibly a link?

thanks

Incorrect. It is a banned substance in sports, because increased DHT is used as an indicator of steroid use. Finasteride is used to mask steroid use/abuse. Because of this, it is a banned substance.

Yes, testosterone levels increase transiently when you begin finasteride. However, it is widely accepted that this increase is transient and becomes negligible over time as extra T is converted to estradiol via aromatase. This conversion to estradiol (estrogen) coupled to a decrease in DHT, an estrogen antagonist, is speculated to play a role in side effects such as gynecomastia.

Flashdance, do you mind sharing some of the foods your are eating to help with the increase calorie and protein intake and how many meals you are eating a day. I have been wanting to get serious about changing my diet and wanted to get some ideas on what to do.

Thanks.

ive been slowly shedding for a couple years and its just getting worse so im considering taking finasteride. im 19 and my receeding hair line is getting worse and i can just tell its thinner. id rather do something about it now rather than later but i dont want to grow a pair of tits because of it. if "gyno" gets bad couldnt there be a type of hrt or trt?

How heavy bars do you have to lift to gain muscle? I'm too f*****g weak for this thing, I'm afraid. I will still try finasteride though.

i m glad to hear you have gained some muscle.... but since you started finasteride and inreased protein shakes, how has you hair been effected? has it thinned? stayed the same? or continued to improve slow/normal/fast pace?

i have never had problems with gaining mass (i guess its in my genetics) and people always think i am taking steroids but since taking finasteride, i have found it very difficult to motivate myself to hit the heavy weights :dunno:

Just so you know, the incidence of gynecomastia is well under 1% over the incidence on placebo. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm on finasteride, and doing the most intensive workouts ever in my life. As a matter of fact, when I started working our a few years back I wasn't on finasteride and had LESS motivation.

That being said, I have also been eating very clean i.e. no trans fat, no white bread & sweets - lots of protein and whole grain carbs. I have also made an attempt to stay really focused in what I'm exercising. This is because I have made it a personal goal to look incredibly shredded by april 2009.

I suggest that before you blame finasteride for your lack of motivation, eat healthier and regain your focus. I guarantee you will have success and finasteride is pretty much a non factor here.

@Nathaniel,

I think you make a very good point; I'm quite sure that in the cases where people do experience some of the side effects that in most cases there will be a way to push through them with the right mental attitude.

Heh, I sound like one of those inspirational talkers :)
