Free Testosterone's Role

What is the role of free testosterone for male pattern hair loss ?

Some people says that people with DUPA or diffuse hair loss types have free testosterone sensitive hair follicles.

For these people hair follicles are not only sensitive to DHT. Hair follicles are sensitive to free Testosterone and DHT together.

For these people 5 alpha reductase inhibitors don't work very well..

Is this true ??

Human hair follicles don't generally miniaturize from testosterone alone, at least not until decades of cumulative exposure, and even then they don't completely go away like male pattern baldness.

The typical Androgenetic Alopecia is strictly a factor of DHT.

So your saying T is not a factor at all in male pattern baldness? Doesnt higher T generally mean more is converted into DHT though? There was a study showing men injected with T started balding so is that from higher DHT then or just the higher T?

men who inject testosterone (steroids) will have that T converted to DHT which is the reason "higher testosterone" cause hairloss. If you inject T and take dutasteride at the same time this wont happen though.

Pretty much this.

Thank you for this nice answer.

But I talked about only free testosterone's role. Not DHT and 5 alpha reductase factor.

Because some people use finasteride and dutasteride, but their hair loss continue. Not stop.

If this people use testosterone blockers like Cypterone Acetate, their sebum produciton decreases, hair loss is stopped and their hair grow back.

Some male pattern hair loss types like DUPA have different reasons like free testosterone. Not only DHT.

I do not know the answer to this

Thats a very good question,

actually dutasteride and finasteride INCREASE t levels a lot (dutasteride at 0.5mg increase t at 99%)
at the same time they DECREASE dht lvls

intersting what would have happedned if someone with male pattern baldness would totlly wipe out all t in his body,
this way -
no t = no dht = maybe a full head of hair ???
i wonder how no t will affect other things besides hair and sebum

Where did you read that DUPA is a result of free testosterone?

I'm curious about this b/c I've been on finasteride for 7 months now and only started b/c of some minor thinning at my hairline but have been shedding 150+ hairs from all over my scalp daily since starting treatment. I've lost ~30% density all over my scalp. My back and sides are really thinning. I've got no family history of baldness and made it to my mid 30s with teenage thick hair so this is really weird.

I have naturally low DHT levels ( always had a patchy beard, not a lot of body hair, very slender build) I am curious if the elevated free test from finasteride has been hurting more than helping

Did you get a blood test? what were your DHT levels?

I did have a blood test done but it was through the VA medical system so they wouldn't do a full hormone profile for hairloss..

Thyroid function and vitamin levels were all within norm

I am paying out of pocket to have a hormone profile done sometime in the next couple of weeks. So unfortunately, no I do not have baseline levels

I believe i have naturalky lower DHT levels bc I am 34 and can't grow a beard/ sideburns.. Pure speculation I know.

My DHT level is 22 on a range of 18-72 which is obviously very low. I have a large amount of body and facial hair growth, deep voice, all masculine traits. It is not correlated with DHT enough to come to such a conclusion
