Dont worry about measuring anything. The crown is the harder part, ALOT of foam gets caught up in the long hair around the crown. I usually stick the Rogaine Foam nozzle right down deep in my hair at root level just above my scalp then squirt a little on at various places im thinner. Then I use my finger tips to massage it in to the scalp the best i can. Its tricky but can be done. Foam doesnt hurt hair at all. Sometimes I didnt wash my hair for 3-4 days with foam still on the shaft of some hairs. It doesnt do damage. I did that for around 6 months and got some good crown improvement. However now, ive gone shorter. Applying meds is so much better!
Good luck.

I started to apply the foam directly to the scalp in the way you have, but you have to be careful otherwise you can overload it. That's not damaging, just wasteful !
