First time treatment - finasteride or dutasteride?

I've been reading all about this dam subject and it seems that the basic choice is whether to take finasteride or dutasteride with minoxidil being an option for external stuff.

I've read about dutasteride being more effective in effectively eliminating type 2 DHT and there effects of the drug once taken are longer lasting so that the profile of type 2 DHT in your system is suppressed for longer. WIth this in mind surely then is it not a no brainer in that the best option if you want to save what hair you have left to start treating yourself immeidately with Dutasteride.

I've read some people say that try finasteride first and see how you get on with it. The logic is understandable and would seem to be that because finasteride has been approved under studies and in theory is more stable for hair loss. But dutasterde has been approved for prostate issues so the drug is safe but untested and approved for hair loss.

What is the general view on this? I think to myself why risk waiting for a year on finasteride and risk more hair loss when dutasteride is seeimngly more effective in lowering DHT anyway.

Feedback is much appreciated.

finasteride is FDA approved. dutasteride is not. Take dutasteride and then get into sever difficulties you won't have a leg to stand on.

But the choice is yours..

Trax, you may not be a big fan of dutasteride but don't go round suggesting it causes spontaneous leg separation.

We know Finasteride is a (relatively) safe drug as it's been on the market for many years now, Dutasteride's clinical trials have not been conducted on men as young as many of us, I believe.

If you give it a year and decide the finasteride isn't working it's not going to be too late to recover any hairs lost in that time by then switching to dutasteride - assuming that the lower DHT level from dutasteride is what's needed. I used finasteride prior to dutasteride and so speak from personal experience.

dutasteride is stronger than finasteride but with more possibility of side effects. So, I think your best bet will be finasteride. In fact, most of the people start with finasteride. Good Luck.
