Hello everyone,

For the past 4 years or so I've had a patch of hair near the top of my scalp that has been giving me problems. Before the problems began, this area on my scalp was mostly covered with blond hair (even more so during the summer months), while the rest of my hair is a dark brown. When I was 19-20, I noticed the hair began to thin a bit. Now a few years later, at age 24, the hair remaining is quite thin, leaving now a red patch on my scalp. With my previous hair style, I could cover it up a bit with the way the rest of my hair would lay, but two days ago I said eff it and buzzed my head. I can now fully see the difference in scalp color and the the size of the patch. The patch often is a little irritating, with a bit of itchines. And even now as I write I can just feel that it is there. Oddly enough, 2 nights ago, while laying in bed, (mind you I wasn't even thinking about "it") the area began to pulsate. <Yes I know that sounds a little odd.

Anyways, I've never gone to a dermatologist to have it looked at, frankly because I've never had the money or time to put into it. But now with the discovery of your forum I thought someone could shed some light on my issue.

Here are a couple links to some photos:

As a side note, as a young child I used to twirl my hair in this area quite often.

Thank you, and I appreciate any feed back. Cheers

to be honest with you, that does NOT look like Male pattern baldness, moreso like alopecia areata.

re:

I suppose you would have pointed it out, but has this area of your head ever received trauma (burns, beatings, irritation etc.)?

No, no traumas, just what I've stated already, which was as a young child I would twirl the hair. This went on for many years though.

I've been looking at some sites concerning alopecia areata, and this just doesn't make sense for my condidtion. From the photos (and you can see this a lot better in person), you can tell the effected area is red compared to the rest of my scalp. And along with itching, these two problems are not a result of alopecia areata. Well, I'll keep looking around, but I may just end up seeing a dermatologist. thanks everyone

Good luck with it, but I definatly think its some genetic condition rather than a result of you twirling your hair. Lots of kids do things like that.

Well it's definately not male pattern baldness. It is likely something inherited. Considering that the hairs are a different color it may just be a physiological problem in that part of your scalp. See a dermatologist.

hey I have the exact same thing, but mine's really small, like fingernail size.

the patch is kinda blotchy red, like yours. for years it sprouted almost grey-like hairs and then it stopped recently (sometime in the last year or two).

there was an incident years and years back where I had something stuck in my hair and so I ripped it out - and the hair came with it. It was roughly the same area, so I always thought it was because of that...
