First post, have a question about Propecia

Hello to all of you. While I hate that I am here, because obviously it means that I'm having hair loss, it's great to see that just from reading through a few posts, this seems to be a great and helpful community.

I just started using rogaine, yesterday actually. I went to my dermatologist and he said to start the rogaine and call back in 3 months and tell him how it's going. He said I could also do propecia.

Since then I've been thinking more about it and seems like a good idea. I'm 24 and have thinning on the top/crown, and am thinking about doing rogaine, propecia, and nizoral.

The only thing is, and yeah this is pretty sad, but I have never swallowed a pill in my life.

So I'm going to have to get over whatever little built up phobia I have of swallowing pills. I know, it sounds horrible like I'm a baby.

But the point of this post is I was wondering if someone can post the size of the propecia pill? Also, if I were to cut the pill, or chop it up and eat with food or something would that affect it at all, or make it not as effective.

Wow... just read this post back... I really need to man up! Jeez... but can anyone answer my question anyway?

Good for you! Do NOT swallow pills whole, unless they are specifically designed to be "time-release". Chew them up and swallow them. You'll absorb them better.

That's perfectly fine, but I wouldn't even go to that much trouble. Just pop it in your mouth, chew it up, then swallow it.

Bryan,

are you being serious? haha, i almost feel like you're being sarcastic with me. then again I am really tired and have probably been reading about hair loss for too long, so it's probably just me.

yeah i've been trying to see if propecia would be okay to chop up since other people do it with the avodart one i was thinking it would probably be okay. but i did not know that it would be BETTER if i chewed it up. that's interesting.

well your post and other things i've read have pretty much solidified that i will be calling my Doctor first thing monday to get propecia!

i really hope this, nizoral, and rogaine will work! I know there could be much worse things that could happen to me, but man... losing hair is so horrible lol.

I kinda just fear any side effects or other health problems that could come from taking these drugs though... but they seem safe i guess for the most part. :)

I'm absolutely serious as a heart attack. There have been several other threads, both here and on other sites, where I've tried to impress on people NOT to swallow pills and capsules whole, unless there's a really good medical reason to do that (like if it's a "time-release" formulation). That includes both prescription drugs, and nutritional supplements. I could go into some more detail about why I recommend that, but it's getting really late and I'm tired, and I'm about to turn in for the night.

Do not follow Bryan advice on chew the pill and then swallow it. Some parts of the pills will be lost into your teeth. The pill will eventually be absorbed faster if chewed, but you'll lose some mg's of the pill. If you want to have a similar effect, just take a hammer and make the pill a dust, put that into water and drink.
Although, unless you're suffering from something that some minutes matter, why the hell would you want Finasteride to be absorbed some minutes/1h faster?

wouldn't what ever gets caught in the teeth soon be swallowed anyway?

Glad that my thread brought together some old pals lol.

While you two are having your reunion, would you mind giving a newbie some advice on a shampoo?

I'm starting rogaine and going to use nizoral at least every few days to see how it goes and see if my scalp gets dry or anything, but with putting all this on my head what's a good shampoo to use?

i'm using nioxin 2 right now with conditioner... and is there any reason not to use conditioner with the nizoral?

thanks

I'm not an old pal, but if you still want my advice, here it goes:

Use Nizoral twice or thrice a week;
If you can afford, buy Revita and use it 4-5x a week.

You can look at other shampoo's that help hair loss, those with cooper peptides are the best.

Okay thanks, I will look into cooper peptides and some shampoos with that in it.

I will read up on Revita too, but really I guess I'm looking for something to wash my hair with every day. Something for moisture I think would best. Head and shoulders is what I usually use, and makes me not feel dry on the scalp, but I think maybe I should look into some other options at this point.

anyway, i'll read up on some cooper peptides, thanks!

Oh, if you aren't wanting a medical shampoo for daily use, I recommend you L'oreal thickening shampoo, it makes your hair look ticker and stronger!

Is it a cosmetic shampoo or medicinal? Could you appoint where to get it and why do you recommend?

Its a cosmetic shampoo, but its awesome. You can buy it in most high quality barber shops in the UK and some in the US although over there it is considerably less commonly available. Its available online, not sure I will be allowed to post links to online sellers so just google it!

nioxin is not a good one. it's a scalp shampoo which in long run will fry your hair dead. i've used it for like 3-4years and my hair is dry like h*ll and easily drop especially during towel drying.

i would suggest you use Nizoral 2% every 2-3days and alternate with Avalon Organics Biotin B-Complex Thickening Shampoo. it has all the ingredients like wheat protein, biotin, saw palmetto and rosemary for hair loss and most importantly, no SLS or SLES. it's pure organic, so no harm and yet darn cheap!

do read my page.
