Finpecia + nizoral

I'm thinking about trying some finpecia alongside my current use of nizoral 3-4 times a week.

I can get 100 x 1mg pills for £29 ish, but would probably half the tablets so they would last me a good 7 months or so.

I'm 23 and in very early stages of hairloss (noticeable on crown in certain lights, and hairline has receded around 0.5-1 inch)

Can I expect good results (being at an early stage and quite young), and with lowering the dosage to 0.5mg i'm hoping the side effects will be minimal (low libido, erectile dysfunction etc)

Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated.

From both various proffesional studies and 3rd hand accounts from this site; lowering the dosage of finasteride is not likely to reduce any side-effects that you may experiance to any significant extent; unless of course you reduce the dosage to such a degree that the finasteride is not going to do much to reduce your hairloss either.

The reason is in my mind two-fold. Firstly, there is AFAIK only one biochemical effect of finasteride on the body and that is to reduce the number of 5-alpha reductase enzymes, mainly within the scalp region. It is precisely this is effect (or rather its influence on DHT levels) that is responsible not only for the cessation of hair-loss, but also for the manifestation of side-effects. As a result, as I already mentioned you cannot stop hair-loss without the side-effects coming up (if they are to happen with you).

Secoundly, the effectiveness of finasteride related to the amount of its dosage is not a straightfoward linear relationship, a 'straightline' so to speak whereby the efficacy of finasteride increases upward directly proporitional to how much finasteride is taken. Rather, at a certain level (a considerably small dose), the efficency of finasteride reaches 95% of its theoretical maximum, and any additional amount, even doubling or tripling the amount taken, will net only very insignificant improvements in efficiency.

So in short - don't fret; just take the finasteride and see what happens. The chances overwhelmingly are, that either you will not experience side-effects, or that the side-effects will be relatively mild and temporary, going away after a couple of months. Reading through a lot of accounts on this site will affirm that impression if you desire a secound-opinion.

Cheers for the reply!

I will stick to 1mg a day then for the first batch (around 3 months worth)

I've ordered it from inhouse along with some more 2% nizoral! I don't expect drastic differences, least of all within the first few months. Aiming just to slow the male pattern baldness and hopefully regain a bit around my vertex. Then once I've managed that, carrying on taking the finasteride for maintenance purposes but maybe reducing the dosage to 0.5mg or even 0.25mg.

Fewer/smaller the side effects, obviously the better.

Lets hope the finasteride gets through customs (I'm in the UK)
