finasteride with or without Min? ... and how do you decide?

Hey all,

I'm wondering how you go about deciding to use finasteride by itself or with Min?
I see a lot of posts, and received some advice, that I should start out with finasteride first and see how it works... a few other posts seems to think starting with both is recommended for the best results.

I've got some temple recession and a typical balding spot in the back but my main concern is the front. From the front to about 3 or 4 inches back it is thinning diffusely. I normally part my hair at the side so it kind of masks the problem (and is probably why I didn't notice sooner) but if I part it in the middle or try to spike the front at all I can see that it is so thin there now it's scary. :freaked:

I know HairLossTalk.com has said that finasteride works really well for diffuse thinners but what is the likelihood of me getting back decent coverage in that respect without using Minoxidil? I was under the impression that finasteride mainly did it's job maintaining what you have but that less than 20% experienced any real regrowth. I've read quite a bit but this still seems confusing to me, I guess.


As a side question... I don't seem to shed much at all. I never see anything of note on my pillow, little comes out in my hands in the shower, etc... Is there any relation between how much you shed before treatment vs how much you might shed after, as it begins to work?

I'd wish someone told me this sooner so now I will tell you: My temples has receeded very much and I' also thin in the centre-front. I have used finasteride for 16 months: no result. I then switched to Dutasteride: side effects.

Now I'm going back to finasteride. I have learned that finasteride is not enough when treating the front and temples (maybe in like 2% of the cases it is).

1) I now use Fincar (generic Proscar) instead of spending all my money on original Propecia. This keeps the costs down to an absolut minimum.

2) I also use Nizoral 2% now.

3) I hated Rogaine (minoxidil 5%). Had to use it twice a day and the alcohol made my skin flake like crazy. I got to know a specialist in hairloss and he recommended Proxiphen. Have you heard of minoxidil 5%, spironolactone, SOD's etc.? Well, this product is a combo of the above mentioned!!! Doesn't get any better, oh yeah: it's without alcohol, more cream like.
You only have to apply Proxi ONCE a day, and after a year only once every other day. So even though it's 100$ each bottle, it will be half the price after a year.

All in all I still pay less for this kick-*** regimen than I did when I was tricked into buying the original Propecia at the pharmacy.

Take the above "boosted" big three, and I'm sure this will do the trick for you.

Proxiphen sounds good but $100 a bottle is wayyy too expensive for my budget right now. :cry:

Listen it's a matter for you to work out. If you are so concerned that finasteride will not do the job then get on the minoxidil as well but if you try the finasteride first and stay with it for a year then if you are not one of the few that has great regrowth try adding the minoxidil and don't forget to add Nizoral to that too.

This battle is long and hard :freaked2: and you will lose many little brave hair soldiers on the way but remember we will beat them evil terrorists :hairy:

Ps You could always try Dutasteride it's good sh*t. I cook mine up and inject once a day :dizzy:

I know $100 is much. BUT 1) you don't have to soak every area on the scalp - it will distribute itself underneath and 2) I use it only on my front, so one bottle will last for 3 months and 3) remember that after a year, it's half the price for the rest of your life.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it also contains copper peptides.

I mean if you can't afford this, then your not concerned enough about your hairloss.

For me the whole regimen, Finasteride, Nizoral 2% and Proxiphen is about 500 dollars a year, that's 40 a month.
