Finasteride taking leads to allopregnanolone depletion in human brain

Because 5ar2 is also found in the human brain (http://www.hindawi.com/journals/au/2012/530121/tab3/) taking finasteride will have an effect on it due to allopregnanolone depletion (http://www.lf1.cuni.cz/Data/Files/PragueMedicalReport/pmr_110_2009_03/pmr2009a0025.pdf ; http://www.degruyter.com/view/j/hmbci.2010.1.issue-2/hmbci.2010.010/hmbci.2010.010.xml). Allopregnanolone is needed for neurogenesis, studying, stress control and probably many other stuff, if you start reading studies (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20486040). Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and depression patients also have low levels of allopregnanolone.

So stop taking it and hope you get your allopregnanolone back, because your neurons need it!

I don't understand why the link won't work in the first post. Try it here!

These studies indicate that finasteride may induce depressive symptoms due to these effects. You are jumping to completely unfounded conclusions suggesting that Alzheimer's and Parkinson's may also result from finasteride use, and I construe that as fear mongering.

Your first link actually reaches the opposite conclusion that you did. It actually said (with regards to 5AR-2): "not detected in fetal liver, adrenal, testis, ovary, scalp, and brain".

You are using extremely simple and flawed logic (low allo levels may be linked to neurodegenerative disorders, and since finasteride lowers allo levels, finasteride causes these disorders). None of these studies say that finasteride may cause anything other than depressive symptoms, which is something we already know. Also, none of these show that finasteride lowers allo levels in the brain in humans. Even if this is the case, how much does it lower it, exactly? How much is dangerous? How do we know that slightly lowering allo levels is dangerous, or that it isn't actually protective? We know that high cholesterol is unhealthy, but so is low cholesterol. There is so much we don't know about how the brain works. What's comforting to me as a finasteride user is that tens of thousands of men have been studied taking this stuff for years, and it's never been shown to cause any mental symptoms of any sort.

Enough with the fear mongering. If you have some new, more concrete evidence that supports your theories, we would be glad to see it. Otherwise, this type of interpretation of small animal studies in attempt to scare people is best left at propeciahelp.

This is pretty new info for me. Read the whole of the first link I posted. There's written (the +-s indicate it's positive staining in the brain): "Cerebral cortex: pyramidal c (++)". If 5ar2 wasn't found in the scalp, we would have no use of it :D. And not only should we be looking at 5ar2 now, but also 5ar3 which is also inhibited by finasteride.
I have only come across studies that conclude, that low allopregnanolone no way good for the brain. Perhaps you're right, but I doubt it.
Allopregnanolone is only made in the nervous system, since it's a neurosteroid (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroactive_steroid). Therefore, if we have get a reduction in the plasma due to finasteride, we most probably also lose it from our brains, because as we know, it hampers its production. Dihydroprogesterone to tetrahydroprogesterone is the same as testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. These processes are done by a reductase.

But does it also comfort you that many respected doctors and professors are saying that post-finasteride syndrom exists and trying to find a solution for it? They even made a foundation:

"The biosynthesis of allopregnanolone in the brain starts with the conversion of progesterone into 5α-dihydroprogesterone by 5α-reductase type I. After that, 3α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase converts this intermediate into allopregnanolone.[2]Allopregnanolone in the brain is produced by cortical and hippocampus pyramidal neurons and pyramidal-like neurons of the basolateral amygdala"

Do they write how much 1mg finasteride lowers allopregnanolone? For dht its 70% so it would be interesting to see especially when it comes to microdosing

I know Mucuna lowers prolactin and raises testosterone. Do you happen to know what your prolactin and testosterone levels were before and after treatment with Mucuna? What kind of dose were you taking? Are you still taking it?

You might have very high 5 alpha reductase function and therefore very high DHT levels in serum. Do you know what your DHT level is?
