Finasteride Shed

Hi guys I have been browsing this forum for a while but this is my first time posting.

I'm 23 and my hair loss began in early 2014, my hairline started to recede in early 2014 and it receded very very slowly. In March 2015 the receded hairline became a minor "M" shape and at that time I noticed I had to do something about it. So I started applying 5% minoxidil at the temple area, it didn't too much apart from growing a few tiny hairs but I am not complaining because my hairline only receded like 2mm since the application of minoxidil.

In July 2015 I noticed my crown area was thinning and I could just see a bit of my scalp so I also started to use minoxidil on my crown, things didn't improve and the crown area kinda worsened in winter and I constantly see 10+ hair on my pillow when I wake up or 30+ when I wash my hair. So I decided to start taking finasteride on 31/12/2015, it has almost been a month now since taking finasteride and I no longer see any hair on my pillow and I only lose around 10 hairs when I shower. Things seems to be doing well, however since taking finasteride my crown area seems to have worsened which I don't understand, is it possible that this is a finasteride shed? Whenever I apply minoxidil on crown I lose around 10 "1 cm long" hair. Please could anyone give me any advice, how come my crown is getting worse when I am losing less hair...

My hairloss had been unnoticeable until I started finasteride.... Thanks everyone

I'm an east Asian btw

Just tough it out man. When I was going through the exact same thing, my logic was "it always gets worse before it gets better". Shedding can be distressing and elicit anxiety, but know that it will stabilize in time and you'll start to see results. Have faith and be patient.
Good luck brother

Okay thanks a lot for the reply!

I am going to stick onto finasteride for at least a year anyways, so far no sides at all and its great. Was just wondering if this sudden crown area shed is normal, especially when my hairloss has significantly improved.

Just remember that hair grows in cycles. Shedding always means there will be a new hair to replace it.

Just thought of sharing my experience so far with finasteride..
I've been on finasteride 1 mg/day for about 75 days along with minoxidil for almost an yr now..Initial 2-3 weeks,my hair shed completely stopped but recently picked up again.. I've also been suffering from itchy scalp even before starting finasteride and I use Clobetasol topical which helps a little..

Thanks everyone! I will stay on finasteride for at least a year. And the fact that no hair on my pillow anymore is so encouraging!

Itchy scalp could very well be a localized reaction to the propylene glycol from the minoxidil
