Hey,
I have been lurking on here off and on for about year and finally decided to register. I have been taking Finasteride (1.25 mg) for a little over 2 years and have been experiencing sheds of varying intensity for most of the time (I had a bout of trauma induced telogen effluvium beforehand so some of the sheds may not be a result of Finasteride). The sheds have been diffuse and the new hair that has grown mixed in with the existing terminal hair is generally thin, even in non male pattern baldness prone areas, like above my ears.
Thankfully, I'm part Middle Eastern and have/had very thick, wavy medium length dark hair to start, so even as I have experienced sheds it's never been something terribly noticeable. Even now, only under certain lighting can you see my scalp.
I feel as if my hairs are on 2 paths:
1. The terminal or thicker hairs that continue to shed for whatever reason
2. The new growth that begins as very thin, sheds and regrows slightly thicker, sheds again and regrows thicker
I was wondering if this is typical for other people using Finasteride. Can it take several hair cycles for the hairs to become thick again? Has any one else had this experience of going through cycles of thinner hairs that progressively become thicker following sheds and regrowth? Also how long did it take to return to having thicker hairs? Even though I would want greater results after having used the product for over 2 years, I want to remain optimistic that perhaps I will start to see truly impressive growth and recovery in another year or 2... that is assuming that my hair really is cycling until it becomes thick again.
