I'm 21 years old with receding temple points. My question is, how well does finasteride/rogaine work for young men? Also, is 21 too young to start finasteride?
Receeding temples? Depends. Some people get a mature hairline. So it might not even be male pattern baldness. A picture would help. Best bet is to go to a derm and ask for a test to see if your hair is being effected by DHT.

Rogaine or Propecia is a personal choice.

Propecia is best when started early, like yourself. It will hold off further loss of hair pretty well. Rogaine has the ability to regrow some hair, but you have to apply it to your noggin 2 times a day. Hassle. While Propecia is a pill you pop once a day.

No, I don't think 21 is too early to start. There are people that have been on it for 12 plus years and they started at 18.

Started finasteride + minoxidil at 19. I jumped straight into it because I wasn't a naive pussy who believed a few insignificant accounts of extremely unlucky people who did experience any side effects. Fact of the matter is, if you worry too much about side effects, you'll probably convince your brain that your c*** isn't going to work. Guess what? If you think too much about something.......

You other message was insulting me, stating that if doing minoxidil 2x a day is too hard I should lose my hair.

You didn't get it, to most people, it is a hassle that they might not need to do. Not saying I wouldn't do it, but I think the person should think about adding Min. Some people, especially younger, their hairloss is unnoticeable So If it is, why add Min and finasteride? He should add the easiest one, finasteride, see if there is 'thickening' up or regrowth in the year. If it leaves him the same and he wants more hair, Min is the way to go. At least you know if Min or finasteride worked first. Its a long fight and he shouldn't rush into everything all at once.

Look at this new success story on just finasteride: http://www.hairlosstalk.com/interact/showthread.php/63983-Success!!-2-years-on-Finpecia, he didn't notice regrowth until month 18. Its crazy and now he has the option if he wants to start min, but if I was him I wouldn't. That's great hair. But its personal.

I say if your losing hair regardless of if its a mature hairline that you do something right away because it might not magically stop at a mature hair line or exactly what that even means is open to interpretation. Losing hair is losing hair no matter what you call it. I say long term finasteride is your only choice you can try rogain but I know guys that tried just rogain early on and they are bald today they never tried propecia but probably should have.

abcdefg, I agree with you there. I have "very slowly" been thinning since I was 18. I think I have a 'good' head of hair for thinning for 8 years. But I wish I just jumped on finasteride when I was like 22 (most people here didn't think I had male pattern baldness, so I put it off for 4 ****ing years!)

As for 'mature hairlines' they exist. Most people don't bald further. You can ask your dermatologist to do a test to see if you will recceed further or have male pattern baldness. I think a lot of young people freak out at having a NW2, which is normal. But if you see it slowly keep creeping, get on that Propecia.
