I was on finasteride for about 2 months. I switched to dutasteride because I am 20 with a nw3 pattern and I want regrowth, not just maintenance.

finasteride if you have minor hair loss and want to maintain

dutasteride if you want to regrow, or you stopped responding to finasteride. or if you just want the most powerful oral drug out there for hair loss.

I'd say always finasteride first, since it's approved for hairloss and dutasteride. isnt.

Also, it's not as strong, doesn't affect the 5AR in the brain, and works very well for most people. it's not for "minor" hairloss only.

Also, your doctor is less likely to prescribe dutasteride. for hairloss, (probably not likely to do it at all, unless you've tried finasteride. first and it didn't work) so people are more likely to use it without the supervision of a doctor.

you can get a prescription at http://www.medicalwellness.com and walgreans or similar pharmacies wil honor it for dutasteride. if they don't have it in stock, ask them to special order it. They can get it in 2-3 days. my campus pharmacy special orders dutasteride.

as for 5ar1, 2-3 pills per week will have little effect on it.

finasteride will probably just maintain. i think dutasteride will grow 40 more hairs or more than that at the 1 year mark and probably not lose as many over the years like propecia which goes back to baseline. i doubt you will just keep regrowing hairs over the years. You will probably peak in 3 at most.

if people want to regrow without having to deal with topicals, i'd go with dutasteride. istand by that.

i see your points about how some doctors won't prescribe dutasteride, but plenty of people are on here who have doctors who won't even prescribe them finasteride. dutasteride was approved by the fda and it is a safe drug.

dutasteride is fda approved, yes, but not for hair loss. Also, it doesn't have the long term studies that finasteride does, and hasn't been around as long.

When reading an article on the safety and side effects of commonly used drugs in a medical magazine of my mothers (she's a doctor), there were many issues raised, but one that stuck with me was a good way for going about using drugs. They pretty much said when deciding which drug to take, if they were similar, always take the one that has been around for the longest.

Now i'm not saying that all new drugs are more dangerous of course, but the truth is every drug has side effects. It is "safe" but it still has side effects. I mean Vioxx was FDA approved, and ended up being deadly. Now i'm not saying anything like that is going to happen with dutasteride of course.

Check the dutasteride vs finasteride thread that was around a while ago, me, stax, powersam and aplunk were discussing all this.

Anyway, there is where you'll see why we were saying always finasteride before dutasteride. But beware of all the info stax posted about dutasteride causing so many different side effects, and being potentially dangerous... as we were saying to him it's just speculation at this point.

it blocks DHT and is metabolised by the same enzyme and is a similar molecule.

If you are really worried about 0.5mg per day, I agree that maybe in 5 years who knows. But proscar has been around longer than propecia and 0.1mg dutasteride is just like proscar. Everyone here should be OK taking 2 dutas per week, monday friday. That is $11 per month if you don't buy in bulk, and $8 if you get 20 strips. Best of all, you can use the money you saved not taking the other pills to get more topicals.

Those of you who just want to take a pill and not use any topicals may have to debate and research what dose you want to take. But for those of you on a budget like me, who like attacking hair loss from many angles, I think it is obvious that 2-3 per week is probably the best dose. Maybe EOD or 4x, but I prefer to take 2 and eat a grape fruit every other day, since I eat lots of fruit anyway. I also heard that grapefruit seeds are good for you. Just don't eat apple seeds, though.
