Finasteride: Myth or Miracle ??

From what I've been reading on all these different forums you'd think that Finasteride is the biggest scam of all time. It seems that it does absolutely nothing for so many people. Yet then there are those who swear it works. I don't know what to think. I am experiencing diffuse thinning and have been on Propecia for two months and I do have faith that it will work. In fact, I'm counting on it. I just can't figure out why it does not work for some people. If finasteride blocks DHT in some heads why not everyone? I will definitely give it a try for at least a year or two. I'm really hoping it's the Way.

People freak out about sheds thinking the hair that falls out is never going to grow back when male pattern baldness is all about hair growing back thinner over time until the hair is so thin and short that it can't be seen.

The sheds caused by propecia are Telogen Effluvium like, meaning they are all over the scalp. But of course to the patient it is more noticable on top because thats the problem area to begin with.

I think a lot of the guys who have success stop visiting the forum.

You've got a good attitude about it and giving it a try for a year or two is really the best thing you can do (if you are not experiencing serious side effects) because the longer you use it the more hair growth cycles you will have gone through and if its working - each regrowth is healthier than it would be if you were not inhibiting that DHT!

Good luck. I'm getting on propecia at the start of Feburary and will most likely keep my hair short for the first year.

sinking,
the problem is people expect too much. finasteride helps you maintain what you have and stop hairloss. I wish I started finasteride early. I started it after becoming NW6 or so.
If you become NW1.5 or 2, finasteride will help you stay there. It won't get you back to Nw1.

It worked for me.

I started thinning around age 30+, and was very obviously balding (thinning on top, temples receding) by 36 when I started Propecia. Within two years, I had grown enough hair back that the loss was unnoticable to anyone but me. I've been shocked when seeing photos of myself years ago... it was a dramatic difference.

Unfortunately, I recently stopped taking it for nearly 9 months when we were considering having a kid. I did start taking it again 4 months ago, but I'm now almost as bald again as I was at 35. I'm PRAYING it'll work for me again... though I'm really sad to have lost what I gained.

Still, my point is my hair loss/gain is very obviously tied to my taking Propecia. Took it, hair grew back. Stopped taking it, it fell out. Let's hope it comes back again.

Why? Plenty of guys say they have had healthy children whil on finasteride. Just be extra careful to keep it away from the wife at all times. Then again, I don't know if finasteride can be transferred by saliva. Probably not.

Its really quite simple.

83% of people respond to Finasteride.

17% do not.

Those who don't respond tend to spend more time on forums like this, looking for alternatives.

Read the studies. Don't base your opinion of a product on anonymous forum posts.

At the time, Merck was still hedging a bit on whether it was safe to use while attempting to have a baby... so I figured I'd err on the safe side. Once Merck finally said it was safe, I started taking it again.

It was a smart decision at the time, but it seriously sucks to have lost years of progress in 9 months. Then again, I THINK the regrowth peaked (or at least slowed down) after a year or two, so perhaps it won't be a long wait to get back to where I was. I'm very obviously thinning now, where before if I told someone I was taking Propecia, the usual response was, "Why?" ;)

. . . . "Why?" ;)

I was on a bunch of hair treatments and added finasteride on top of them. After 9 months on finasteride (plus all the other stuff) I had the pleasure of going from a NW4 to a NW3.

Then (long story - don't ask me why) I ceased all hair regrowth efforts and it took maybe 3 - 4 years to go from a 3 to a 5A.

Playing catch-up is pure hell.

I think it was easier to go from a 4 to a 3 then it appears to be going from a 5 to a 4 - but I remain optimistic.

I was going to go write a massive response to this post, quoting facts, figures, studies etc. But instead Ill just say ditto to the above.

Truth is someone is much more likely to post if they're not getting the results they'd hope for. On top of this a lot of people seem to lack the patience required for this medication. People seem to think that a hair loss treatment will turn things around after only a few months even though they've been loosing hair for many years  just doesn't make sense.

I've been on finasteride for nearly eight months, still shedding, but still have as much faith/determinaion as when I started
