Finasteride making hair loss worse?

When people claim propecia made their hair loss worse is that possible? I mean finasteride raises testosterone which we know negatively affects hair, and you still have some DHT its not completely removed or anything. Also how significant is the fact that hair develops more androgen receptors in response to follicle DHT being lowered?
It just seems to me if frontal hair is more sensitive to testosterone or the increased receptors affects frontal hair more its possible in rare instances finasteride could make hair worse. Most people just instantly dismiss the idea based on the studies merk did, but those studies did not concentrate on people with very minor hair loss like in the front. So we dont know for sure how the negative things it does could affect say hair in the front which could react different. THoughts?

maybe in some people. Not all though. I have taken propecia for 11 months now, and my crown vertex area is noticibly thin. before propecia it was very mild and undectable for years. my dermatologist said by taking propecia it should of left it that way. like 4 or 5 years my crown was the same. after 11 months on it its thinner than before, and the front a little thinner. it looks like my crown took a bigger hit.


some doctors say testosterone on its own does not cause hairloss, and other beleive it does but mildly, DHT is the main cultprit.

to say propecia can accelarate hairloss, the jury is still out. I have heard alot of anectodal that it does. no evidence though.


even now, with the prostagladin studies, dht can even take a back seat maybe. time will tell.

If dht is the main cause of hailoss then a drug like avodart would work even wonders, and yet it hasn't even been approved (probably due to safety issues) and some prople who use it compalin of accelerated hairloss. avodart blocks dht by 90%.

Yeah that is true. DHT is much more powerful androgen, but when you lower DHT more then propecia like avodart would then you must also raise testosterone even more then propecia would. Testosterone is much more mild androgen then DHT but has been shown to contribute to hair loss. Also when you lower DHT hairs develop more receptors which means they would be more sensitive to the testosterone and DHT you have left over.
These things along with hair maybe not being sensitive to all androgens equally could be a reason propecia or even avodart loses effectiveness over time and does not stop hair loss forever. Also hair could gradually get more sensitive to remaining androgens.
I think we just need a better approach to stopping androgens. I hope CB or ascj 9 work out and get here quick. A more powerful topical anti androgen is what we really need that does not increase receptors or increase testosterone that are bad for hair.

I have pretty mild slow hair loss and I just wonder sometimes if its worth using propecia. I just worry about more testosterone and more receptors making up for lower DHT if I have low DHT already. It just seems like with how much we dont understand that it could make my front worse or speed up or something like that. Im tempted to just wait until we have something safer in 5 years instead of the big risk of speeding it up.

yeah you do make sense, but what about all the studies that have shown propecia to work and be effective? are all those pictures fake then? I think merck would be out of business if propecia increased hairloss. were all thre studies bogus?


I have no idea though. I did thin more on propecia than when I wasn't on it. I have no idea though.

Propecia is best treatment out now and works for majority of people. I was just talking about rare cases that it could be possible propecia might make it worse then before you started in people with very little hair loss. Its not proven that happens or anything.

Totes. One time I said Propecia three times in the mirror and my dick shrank. People need to stay away from this stuff!!!!
