Finasteride Is Losing Effect After 6 Years. What Do I Do Now?

Hey guys, long time poster over at the other main hair loss forum (for some reason that place went down big time). So now I'm here.

Anyway, been on finasteride for about 6 years now... experienced some great regrowth and maintained solidly. No side effects. Unfortunately, it looks like it is starting to lose its effectiveness. My trouble spots are starting to get thinner and the dreaded male pattern baldness "itch" has returned.

Oddly this seemed to happen in the last 3 or 4 months... about the same time I started working out seriously in the gym (do I really have to pick between my hair and being in shape?) But it could just be a coincidence.

Anyway, what else can I do? RU58841 is not an option, I've tried it before and I just didn't feel comfortable putting a research chemical on my head.

Should I add a low dose of dutasteride to the mix? Start using nizoral consistently again (would nizoral really make a difference)?

I seem to be extremely sensitive to minoxidil (like EXTREMELY sensitive) as it makes my heart race and I feel light headed after a few days of using it. Even the 2%

Maybe dilute the liquid and try using like a 1% strength?

What do you guys think I should do? Thanks for any advice.

Weightlifting increases testosterone for a few hours afterwards but unless you exercise for hours every day, I doubt it'd lead to a scalp DHT increase. Exercise will actually improve blood flow to follicles making them stronger. So let's rule that out. Instead we can only assume your follicles have grown more DHT sensitive with age, and this is only natural. As to treatment options, use Nizoral once or twice a week. It does wash out scalp DHT which is the catalyst for balding. It certainly can't hurt to use it once or twice a week. Then get a prescription for dutasteride and take 2.5 mg every day. You already know this but let me remind you: DHT causes male pattern baldness. It's that simple. And Dutasteride and Nizoral will cleanse you of it. Good Luck

In the same boat as you. Coming up on 6yrs with finasteride (in late 20's). Worked amazingly well but can sense my hair starting to think in a diffuse pattern now. This also seemed to come on over the last few months so am trying to figure out if there's another explanation. Also do not want to try minoxidil. Please post what you decide here - I'm curious!

As far as dutasteride, isn't it risky because if blocks like all AR-5 as well as the other reductase?

Before Duasteride I would recommend taking a higher dose of Finasteride or using a topical Minoxidil/Finasteride combo (like Brintop). I know it is contrary to literature that this will reduce any more DHT but I have seen people who have done this and it helped. Higher dosages of Finasteride may do little in terms of Serum but in certain tissues can reduce DHT more than 1mg (which is why Proscar is 5mg).

@Retinoid yeah, I've heard the same in regards to increased dosage... my game plan is as follows:

1. Increase finasteride dosage
2. Use Nizoral 2% consistently
3. Light dermarolling

If that doesn't work...

A micro dosage of dutasteride in combination with finasteride... then slowly upping dose until I feel like I'm seeing results.
