Finasteride Blurred Vision

I have been worrying a lot recently about the health of my eyes. Recently one of my eyes has been quite blurry and I also get tired a lot. Could this be due to finasteride?

Blurred vision from finasteride? No.

Blurred vision from the normal process of eye deterioration in certain individuals that perhaps 50% of the population experiences? Most probably.

What boondock said. You get tired when you've blurry vision, especially when you see better through one of the eyes.

Almost every single person experiences some degeneration of the eye as they get older.

I am still young and do not need glasses but I can tell my vision has gotten slightly worse than 20/20 in the past 2 years. It's kind of saddening.

If I were you, I'd go to an eye doctor.

There is no known correlation from finasteride and any eye disorders.

You definitely need to see an eye doctor if you have vision problems. Sometimes there maybe an underlying cause of why your vision is blurry like diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Or it maybe some other medical cause so don't ignore your problem. Go see an eye doctor as soon as possible. Definitely get your sugar checked because people who get tired alot and have blurred vision could have the beginning of diabetes. Alot of times, diabetes can be suspected just from an eye exam. However, only a blood test can confirm diabetes. I have never read any cases where finasteride caused blurred vision but if you use minoxidil that could possibly have some effect on your eyes.

Blurred vision has been a noted side effect of Finasteride use due to loss of androgens (DHT). Note studies at bottom in particular. Meibomian glands and ocular surfaces in teh eye express AR and 5AR enzymes, both get negatively affected when you use finasteride due to inhibition of 5AR2/DHT.

Propecia-associated bilateral cataract

A 43-year-old man presented suffering from decreasing vision in both eyes for 3 months. The patient's visual acuity was 6/20 (non-corrected) in the right eye and 6/10 (?1.75/?1.00 × 91) in the left. Ocular examination of both eyes revealed anterior subcapsular opacities of both lenses with the right eye being more severe than the left. He had been taking finasteride (Propecia; Merck, Sharp and Dohme) at 1 mg/day for 3 years to treat early stage of androgenic alopecia.

It was highly suspected that finasteride was associated with the anterior subcapsular opacity on the lens, and the patient therefore discontinued use of finasteride. He underwent uneventful cataract extraction surgery and intraocular lens implantation of the right eye.

One month after cataract surgery in the right eye, the best-corrected visual acuity was right 6/6 (?1.25) and left 6/10 (?2.00/?0.50 × 100). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of Propecia-associated cataract.





Intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome and finasteride intake

We report 2 male patients who had bilateral cataract surgery. Both patients had features of the intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome (IFIS) in both eyes, and both were taking oral finasteride for the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

We conclude that finasteride can be associated with IFIS, so it is important to take detailed medical histories of patients having cataract surgery, paying attention to a history of BPH and its treatment.

These comparisons showed that the left and right eyes of patients taking finasteride had a significantly higher frequency of appearance of conjunctival bulbar injection (finasteride group, 100%; other treatment group, 50%; P < 0.05), lid collarettes (finasteride group, 66.7%; other treatment group, 15%; P < 0.05), metaplasia of meibomian gland orifices (finasteride group, 100%; other treatment group, 54.6%; P < 0.01), and corneal fluorescein staining (finasteride group, 87.5%; other treatment group, 31.8%; P < 0.01). Finasteride-treated patients also had a significantly greater sensitivity to wind (finasteride group, 75% positive responses; other treatment group, 0% positive responses; P < 0.005)."

Please do not be in denial guys...For real...I understand that this forum is a lot more optimistic than the others (the reason i joined) but The side effects of propecia are for real! I'm not trying to scare anybody but I wouldn't wish the side effects on my worst enemy!

Mew is 100% correct. After using propecia for 6 months I had extreme blurry vision/flickering static (everything looks like a blurry tv screen). Light at night just looks like big blobs.

Since stopping (4 months) the problems have lessened but still I have the tense flickering in my eyes. The blurriness is pretty much gone.

Side effect are real with ANY medication and although they occur only in a small minority of people using Finasteride should be taken seriously. As with any drug if you are getting sides you should always SEE YOUR DOCTOR.

Yeah, you should, but don't bother with finasteride. No doctors will believe anything you say anyway, if it wasn't reported before marketing of propecia.

I agree, Doctors can be pri*ks. I just was making the statement of going to a Doctor rather than coming to a Forum first when you notice you may have side effects from finasteride.

I read over those studies Mew posted again because I've been taking more notice of my eyes not being as good as they were 2-3 years ago and I think it is mostly BS. There has not been any real study, and they haven't made mention of controlling for any other drugs. Being on finasteride might be correlated, but where is mention of no other drugs being taken? What if they are on some sort of blood pressure medication? Anti depressant? Who knows?

Some of those studies are silly, like the ones involving cataracts, the others need a link to the full paper before I even begin to consider them as true.

In my case, it's not so much BLURRY vision like I need glasses. It's more like a fuzzy, flickering in front of my 20/20 vision. My vision is PERFECT. I never took any other meds and my whole family has perfect eyes.


After taking 1.25 millagrams of Finasteride per day for around 7 months, I noticed blurry vision and this would sometimes make me feel slight vertigo. I was never aware of anyone else experiencing this side effect until now. I decreased my dose to around .5 and the side effect subsided. Thanks for the info Mew.

Yes! I still get the vertigo from my vision. Makes me feel so disoriented.

I was experiencing blurred vision before i started any meds. I went to see an eye doctor about it. Turns out it was a happening on days that I drank a lot of caffeine and not eating a lot. The condition is called an ocular migraine. Quite common and nothing to worry about. Just make sure you dont drink a lot of coffee or soda without eating. Can be scary as hell if you dont know whats happening.
