Finasteride And Wanting To Get Pregnant

I've been on finasteride for about four years; it's the only thing I use to treat hair loss, and it's worked great. Now, my girlfriend wants to get pregnant, so I'm thinking of going off it at least for a period of time. If anyone can help me out with the following questions, I'd be very grateful:

1.) how long should it take after I've stopped taking the finasteride for my sperm count to normalize (assuming it does)?
2.) if we are successful, would there any heightened risk to a baby because I've taken it for a pretty long time?
3.) if I'm off the finasteride for a few months (say 6) and go back on it, what will my hair be like? like it is now? as if I had never taken the finasteride in the first place? somewhere in between?
4.) any suggestions for hanging on to as much hair as possible while I'm off the finasteride?
5.) any experiences on going off of finasteride and then going back on?

I'm planning on talking to my doctor about all of this in a week or two, but I'd be willing to bet that this board, collectively, has more knowledge on this subject than my GP does. Thank you.

I took it for 7 or 8 years, quit for 2 weeks, wife got pregnant. And 7 years later, my kid is a healthy boy.

3)- I would not stop it for that long, why? 2 weeks is enough.. If you quit for 6 month, you MIGHT loss a lot of ground, when you get back to finasteride, you will mostly likely not recover anything (maybe a little), just stop the balding process.

5) like i said i went off and then back on. But 2 weeks, I didn't feel I had lost THAT many. Last year I quit for 4 months, man, I lost density. Now I am 1 year back on it again. I recovered some, but it's not like it was before. Balding seems to have stopped, though.

1. Your sperm count should still be normal on finasteride. Should be no need to stop finasteride, unless you are having trouble conceiving.
2. No risks to baby from finasteride. Don't let your girl touch the stuff though.
3. Could lose tremendous amounts of hair if you go off it for 6 months, and it may never come back.
4. I wouldn't go off finasteride (really is no need unless having issues conceiving)
5. Nope

My recommendation: Do not stop taking the finasteride. If you're having trouble conceiving then get your sperm count tested, or get your sperm count tested now. If it is normal then no need to stop finasteride, if it isn't then I would stop the finasteride and get it tested again like 2 weeks later to see if it changes.

Thanks for the insight. I know this is an impossible question, but what is the longest amount of time I could stay off it and still stay or get back to where I am now?

Me personally, I wouldn't take any chances on bringing a kid into the world. I'd taper off in the span of 2-3 weeks and stay off for another day 1-1.5 months and try to conceive and hop back on.

Thanks for the insights. What about all of these horror stories I've seen about people going off the finasteride and having their whole testosterone system crash? How worried about that should I be?

I would just really really really make sure that your girl doesn't touch anything that came into contact with finasteride. Treat it like an ebola blood sample.
Finasteride is absorbed through the skin on contact.

Wether you take it or not doesn't really matter, just don't let it lie around.

There is a three to six month delay between damage done to your hair and your hair actually falling.

You can use ru58441 as a finasteride replacement.
It's weaker but does the job.

Dude. Why on earth would you quit? I conceived my two kids while on finasteride, I never stopped taking it. It has no affect on your sperm count.
