Finasteride and Propecia

Got a quick couple of Q's about finasteride and Propecia.
1) Propecia is incredibly expensive from what I've seen. But finasteride is less expensive. Is it OK to use finasteride? I'm considering getting thirty 5mG tablets of finasteride. This should be enough for 120 days, correct? (Assuming I cut it into 4's)

2) Do I need a prescription? I have a prescription for Propecia, would that work for finasteride?

It's just a little strange that 5mG of finasteride is less expensive than 1mG of Propecia when Propecia has 1mG of finasteride...or something like that....

I'm currently using Rogaine twice a day. Its just keeping my hairline....but it's thinning out everywhere. I need something else and finasteride has a lot of success stories especially with people from my national background.

Thanks in advance

1) Yes the active ingredient in Propecia, is finasteride, using 5mg and splitting it into quarters is what most guys do.

2) No, you will need to get a different prescription for the 5mg finasteride as it is normally used to treat a different condition then hairloss. Just explain it to your doctor that it is to expensive and he should give the script.
