From a site called "Health and Age": "Finasteride (Proscar) has been associated with impotence in between 6% and 19% of patients."

Surprising! I'm still concerned about loss of muscle or difficulty putting on muscle while I'm on this stuff. Or gaining weight. Anybody?

Do a google on DHT and its actions. I think you will get your answer there. If DHT contributes to lean muscle mass and anabolism, the clearly taking finasteride will push you the other way, no?

Honest to God I got flabbier during the four months I took finasteride. I also didn't quite have that "extra push" ability in the gym like I used to; you know during that last set when you gotta get those few extra reps in, and you just force yourself through sheer willpower... that wasn't quite as potent while on the drug. I dunno, maybe it was psychological but I doubt that. I also noticed a significant and persistent reduction in libido.

Since quitting finasteride a couple of weeks ago these side effects are definitely going away (which convinces me further that it wasn't entirely psychological). I was worried that my age--19--might be too young for the stuff, and after Dr. Lee told me that up to 30% of men on finasteride experience side effects, I'm glad I quit it. I'll be using Xandrox and possibly spironolactone as a replacement. If used properly and consistently topicals can be even more effective than a systemic.

It's pretty simple, really, most men rely more on Testosterone for libido and muscle growth/maintenance, while others also rely a great deal on DHT. For the latter group, finasteride requires some serious sacrifices.

Can't disagree with your last conclusion. Finasteride requires tradeoffs. Some are significant.
