Look how she went from a whole head of hair, into the clasic male pattern baldness. This should be telling in some way, ya? It's much more than being predisposed to hairloss because your hair is extra sensitive to DHT. It looks more like there's a direct correlation to the extra Test/DHT, not how much your hair dislikes it.

I hope Chinese people that visit this forum don't get offended. I can't remember what sport it was but I was watching some women's competition this morning and my first thought was that the Chinese participants in this particular sport didn't look feminine at all. They were all 6+ foot tall, muscular, flat chested and they had very masculine faces as well...

I feel sorry for all those athletes that get fed god knows what and they lose their identity.

I believe most athletes are on some designer drug. Marion Jones admitted that she's been taking designer steroids, so what proof do we have that the rest of them don't do it? Alternatively, what proof do I have to make such allegations?

I am not questioning that DHT is the cause of male pattern baldness, I am questioning the theory that more people's hair is more susceptible to it. She was a woman, and yet by a chemical imbalance, she lost hair in the typical male pattern baldness areas. I just think that this shows once in for all, that for all cases of male pattern baldness, all you need to do it correct/change the chemical and any male hair loss sufferer should have a full recovery.

Of course the DHT link is a component, but I think we should be able to rule out gene manipulation. At least we'd have to change the same gene in all people, male or female. More than likely, it's a matter of narorwing down the other chemicals/interactions besides DHT that cause the hair loss. It would be interesting to understand the chemicals she was taking, how it affected her body, and thus be able to reverse engineer. If it could be narrowed down, definitively in her case, that 1) she took steroids that 2) ONLY raised her test and 3) we could measure her elevated DHT levels. It's a perfect controlled experiment where we know a lot more of the variables as opposed to the typical male hair loss sufferer where there are any number of unknown chemicals at work.

If you can cause typical male pattern baldness in a patient who normally wouldn't get it, then theoretically you know 100% what is causing it. Then there would be no question that DHT is the ONLY cause (or some by product of the test). If you have this type of patient, I would think it would be even easier to test other chemicals in her system that change in addition/in place of DHT. A perfect guinea pig.

Thus, if we knew it was 100% in her case of DHT, then why do products like minoxidil work (through vasodilation)? Increasing the amount of DHT wouldn't be a good thing. I would assume she has tried minoxidil to regrow some hair, so did ANYTHING happen? It just seems like she would be the key to nailing down exactly what it is.

Your reasoning seems to be based on the assumption that women can't have DHT/androgen-sensitive follicles, that they are comparable to the non-male pattern baldness men. I don't believe this is correct. The genes for male pattern baldness aren't sex-linked, both men and women have them. So some women have male pattern baldness genes, and some don't, just like men. It's just that they aren't expressed in normal women, because their hormone levels are different from ours. This isn't a new discovery, since it's already well-known that female-to-male transsexuals sometimes go bald.

I love it when the article says that she was given steroids without knowing. What a joke. Are you telling me you are not going to be able to tell you are on drugs once your weight & strength increase? And how about when you get some acne and your voice starts to change. Please.

Another thing to take into consideration besides DHT, is that once hairloss starts you continue to bald even if you halt DHT with drugs. The immune system apparently has been cited as a possible culprit once androgens trigger hairloss. Copper peptides were developed to counter this inflammation and free radical reactions with limited success.
